  • #16 on the combination menu. This is a great choice. Their Chili Rellano IS THE BEST in town. I happen to order the burrito as a spinach one....again …

Favorite mexican in Richmond!. My boyfriend and I live just around the corner and discovered el caporal one Saturday afternoon. We’ve been hooked since and hate eating at other mexican restaurants for fear of feeling like we’re cheating. We love the staff and food. Creatures of habit, we get the same thing and all the servers know what we want before we even order. The chips and salsa are the best by far in Richmond. They also give you ranchero salsa which is like crack. We recently discovered they also have a cilantro/jalapeo salsa that is… mouth watering. The food is very consistent and always good quality. We’ve brought our friends and family here on more than one occasion and they love it. They have margarita specials Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday’s. I haven’t come across a margarita special at any other Mexican restaurant on a Saturday yet. Love this place! I have no idea what some of these reviews are talking about. We come here at least 2-4 times a month, our food is always correct, drinks refilled and the servers work their tails off. Maybe these people came on an off day or something because overall, this is a great place.

Richard was spot on. This place is pretty bad, even by Virginia standards. Server disappeared after food arrived. Had to flag him down for more drinks and had to ask TWICE for the check. They were all standing around the register chatting.

Mr. Richard from California. NEWS FLASH – This isn’t California, buddy…this is Richmond, VA. If you want a quality mexican/tex-mex restaurant, you’ll have to head up to DC. Around here, there are a couple mexican grocery spots that have some nice tacos – Nate’s Taco truck is pretty legit – Cielito Lindo has some decent food (good salsa)….but other than that, EVERY spot is about the same. I agree that El Caporal isnt amazing, and if it werent for a few key items, i’d consider it just another east coast mexican restaurant, but I truely think their sauces are about the best here in Richmond. I think the enchilada sauce does have a cinnamon-like flavor, but to me this makes it taste similar to a mild mole. The green verde is very tasty and actually has a unique flavor compared to all verde sauces i’ve had in the area. The pork they serve here is salty, but has a good flavor. I also enjoy how they go out of their way to adjust the menu….last time I was there they made me the 3-taco combo with pork!As for complaining about the speed, I’m calling shenanigans here. The one thing all east coast mexican spots do well is serve you food and get you the F out as quickly as possible. I’ve had a sit down lunch and been out the door in 15 minutes….30 for dinner (I know this because i have 2 kids under 3 years of age, and any longer would have them running around the place). In summary, no offense Richard, but you may of set your bar a little high when gonig to El Cap. The place is one of my favorite mexican spots in Richmond, but doesn’t touch the quality and flavors of places like the Red Iquana in SLC and others further west. I understand this and just take the food for what it is….salty, cheesy, decently flavorful mexican that can feed my family for around 25 bucks.

My friends all strongly recommended this place and i tried one of this Veg Spinach Quesidilla. Believe me, this was great. Unlike the other Mexican restaurants i had been, other than Qdoba, this is one i would say is great on the quality and the price match. The quantity of food is also large enough to fill you flat. The service is great too. Will return for more.

I love El Caporal the Benavidez are great people and the food is cheap and good. Who is the loser below that ordered the spinach burritto? Try the burritto fajita!

Terrible. I agree with kb- I don’t know why this place is so highly ranked! I think many of the people that like it simply do for some nostalgic value or for it’s familiarity- but being from California I gotta say, this place may be worse than taco bell. The food was nothing special and not even close to authentic. The chips were stale as mentioned in other reviews and the service was absolutely terrible. Our waiter and every other employee disappeared shortly after bringing our food, so we had to find them to get our check, and it took about 30 minutes to get after that. I will not be coming back and I am still searching for a good authentic place if anyone has suggestions. -Richard from California
