Imperial Palace is way over rated. The food is average at best and the fried rice is often very greasy and unappealing. Great service doesn’t make up for the average food. If you’re looking for very authentic Chinese food, then treat yourself to Peter Chang’s (not to be confused with the chain restaurant P.F. Chang’s) located at Landstown Shopping Center across from the Farmer’s Market in Va Beach. Peter Chang is also opening up a smaller scale restaurant at the Va Beach Town Center. People drive for hours to eat at his restaurants. Check out the clientele between Imperial Palace and Peter Chang’s. The clearly dominant Asian clientele will be found at Peter Chang’s…Imperial Palace move over, there’s a new place in town that has truly authentic dishes and great diversity. BTW, a second runner up to Peter Chang’s is Judy’s over at the East Pembroke Shoppes (near the town center, VA Beach).
My husband and I visited the Imperial Palace after it was recommended to us. We didn’t realize that it was a white linen kind of place and walked in casually dressed in shorts and a t shirt. The host didn’t seem to be bothered by our attire and promptly seated us in a comfortable booth. Our waiter greeted us and shared the details on multiple chef’s specials, which all sounded delicious. One pet peeve though is when the server doesn’t include the price in their description. That is still a consideration for most of us, so it would be helpful not to have to ask. My husband chose the Calamari dinner and I selected the Chef’s Beef Special which included steak, asparagus, snow peas, bok choy and more. We both enjoyed the Chef’s Special Crab Soup with a coconut milk base. Everything was wonderful including our waiter. We’ll definitely be back again.
