This is a staple for the area, and a must for anyone traveling close to the Virginia Beach area. Neat decor with a ship outside, underwater inside decor, huge bar area, and very modern and clean restrooms. There is ample seating, and have only had to wait to be seated a small hand full of times, and this was because we were with a large party. When I have been with groups of four of less there is almost never a wait. Staff works good to keep tables clean, and the flow moving. You could always go to the bar for drinks while waiting. Options include a full seafood menu that you can order off of, or the famous buffet that will set you back $32.99. Seems pretty steep at first glance, but it is well worth it based on selection and options, even if your are a light weight and cant throw back several pounds of crab legs. The salad bar is always fresh and nice looking, although to be honest I always skip the salad and go for the gold. They have several soups that I have tasted and are hearty, and tasty – just be careful to not fill up on those. Raw oysters on the salad bar. Veggie bar has a wide range of side items that are all tasty. Mashed potatoes are home made, cabbage is seasoned like grandma fixed it. As far as the star of the show that depends on your taste. There are steamed crab legs that are constantly being replenished. My tip would be to skip getting a mound on a plate, and just a cluster or two at a time so you eat them hot. Once they cool off (And they cool quickly) the taste and quality goes down. Again, there will be plenty for the taking. Hot melted butter, and captains sauce (melted butter, garlic, and seasoning) go well with these. Peel and eat shrimp come plain, or spiced with Old Bay. Some of the best Oyster Rockefeller I have had, and all at your disposal for quantity – easily could make a meal off of these alone. Butter clams, craw fish, and mussels await your picking. Several fried fish selections including scallops. I thought that the scallops were a bit chewy, but its possible that by the time I ate them I was filling up and didn’t enjoy them as much. The prime rib was excellent in taste, temperature, texture and was a real treat for those not exactly crazy about the seafood. Also have pulled pork and BBQ for those looking for an above ground catch. After we stuffed our faces, we were hesitant about dessert, but hey it’s included in the price so why not? They have banana pudding, cookies, strawberry shortcake, several hot fruit cobblers, brownies, carrot cake, chocolate cake, baklava (remember the owner George is Greek – and often will greet you at the door), and on the lighter side a nice mixture of cut fruit. We got a plate full of different items and made it a community plate to share at our table so we could nibble and taste several items.***A few things that I have witnessed cause distress with other customers and you should be aware of: gratuity with party size, drink refills, table time, and price. The price of the buffet is $32.99 a person regardless of how much you eat or don’t eat. If they don’t happen to have blue crab on the line that day (or whatever item you heart desires) the price stays the same. If there is a specific item that your after, you are free to check the bar before committing to that price. Should you have a lite eater, they can always order off the full menu. I think that you pay not only for whats on the bar but the experience and variety, not necessary how many pounds of crab legs that you can put down. You’d be ready to pay $20 for a prime rib dinner easily, and they offer prime rib, shrimp, scallops, crab legs, oysters, clams, mussels, craw fish, and the sides (salad bar, soup, dessert, veggies) and all are UNLIMITED. There is an automatic gratuity added to your check for groups of 6 (maybe 8 not exactly sure) or more. This is in place regardless if you order off menu or get buffet, and kids count towards this number. You could sit at two tables to avoid this, but would be at different spots in the restaurant. This means that for a buffet of $32.99 the added gratuity would be about $5 per person. This is posted CLEARLY when you enter. Some people tend to tip less at a buffet – but here the staff really do work to keep drinks filled, and the table clean. They are also (for the most part) knowledgeable about seafood and will educate you on how to open the crab, or crack the crab legs – again all part of the experience that you pay for. Should you not have the funds, then McDonald’s would be happy to serve you just down the street. Drink refills – some servers will charge you for them and some wont. When they have tried to charge me I asked why they hadn’t before, and why they didn’t tell me that refills were extra. If you ask, they usually take them off. Not sure what the official word is on this. I usually drink water so I don’t fill up on soda and have room for the good eats. Somewhere there is a sign that says if you are there more than two hours they will charge you twice. Not sure if this would ever happen, but I will say that the average Joe should be more than ready to pop after an hour. I’m sure that someone came in once and made a day long event out of it and ate two meals – and thus the sign was erected. Never seen the sign, although heard a lot of talk about it. Hands down a must when I am in the area, well worth the cost. I rarely give 5.0, but this place has it going on. Yes, there is a cheaper option down the street, and have tried it, and it is pale in comparison to Captain George’s.
Best Seafood Buffet Service was Great. Will go back at first chance. Sunday is the best day to go. If you get a chance to go this is the best restaurant.
Total Garbage. Worst food and experience ever. Awful service and fake food. This place needs to be shut down.
I want to live here.. Note, it is not quiet, You have to doge people holding 2 plates of food, You will see lots of people wasting food. But, I loved it.The crab legs are steamed and fresh, and lots of them. The service is great, very attentive and polite.I wish they would open on in Orlando..Special note, only take 2 clusters at a time, there is always lots more, Hot is the way to eat them..
Once, or maybe twice, a year my boyfriend and I go to Capt George’s for dinner. We love this place. Super friendly staff, and the seafood’s good! We’re not big muscle or scallop fans but the fish they offer is always excellent. Obviously the best part is the crab legs. I’m not sure why everyone gives this restaurant a bad rap, we love it!!
Front staff and manager terrible. Food was good, wait staff was awesome. Front staff and manager were horrible. Wait was suppose to be 45 minutes and ended up well over an hour. Front staff was rude and manager was a total jerk. He must be related to owner is all that would explain him having a job. Worst customer service on outer banks.
It’s ok, I guess.. My first time to Captain George’s Seafood. We went on a Saturday at 6pm. Long line and crowded. The food was ok, some items were a bit greasy. If you have a hugh appetite, a healthy heart and love a buffet, this is your place. Our waitress was friendly and kept checking on us.
