Maybe I’m a sushi snob and I’m comparing Passion Fin in Ashburn to Sushi Nami in Alpharetta GA — but the glowing reviews of Passion Fin didn’t pan out. The rice was not sticky or tight enough (comes apart when dipped in soy), the variety of fish shown at the sushi bar was minuscule (looked mostly like Costco salmon) and the quality of the fish was not as fresh as it should be. Sushi should be firm, cold and fresh. Mine was mushy, Luke warm and didn’t look fresh. So – scratch that one off of my list. My mission to find the best damn sushi place in Norther VA (preferably Loudoun) continues.
Good, reasonably priced sushi. The location is in a relatively new shopping center that is removed from the major roadways in the Ashburn area, situated on the far corner of the complex. The entrance is a bit difficult to locate on the side of the building instead of facing the main parking lot. Those barriers aside, the restaurant is nicely decorated in dark wood with a stone-trimmed bar on the side wall and a wood-trimmed sushi bar at the back. We took seats at the sushi bar and were greeted by the waitress and the sushi chefs. The menu is very extensive and the pleasant surprise is that the sushi prices are reasonable. The Sushi Roll Combination and the Spicy Sushi Roll Combination are under $15 and include either salad or miso soup. Seated at the sushi bar, we watched our rolls being prepared. The portion size was deceptively large – on the large plate, the quantity didn’t appear to be much but after consuming the contents, it was quite filling. The spicy rolls (salmon, tuna and California) were very good – flavorful and mildly spicy but not overpoweringly hot – for spicy-food lovers, this would be a disappointment but for most others, it offered a nice kick. Overall the restaurant is nice and reasonably priced – I’ll be back to sample the other offerings.
