VaBch’s Best Mexican Restaurant. Hola! To begin with, we’re from Los Angeles where Mexican food abounds. We moved here seventeen years ago and tried all the Mexican restaurants that were recommended to us by our new friends. We’re sorry to say, it seemed that Hampton Roads just didn’t know or understand what the real Mexican food taste was all about. We must have tried well over a dozen, so called, Mexican restaurants and were sorely disappointed. We were sadly resigned to flying back to L.A. to experience the Mexican food taste that we grew up on.But we understood that this is what Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads grew up with, and if you’ve never tasted Tex-Mex or Arizona Mexican, or New Mexico Mexican or Tijuana Mexican, or Ensenada Mexican or Mexico City Mexican, or San Jose Mexican, how would you really know what the real Mexican food taste was? Then, one day we stumbled into Taqueria San Jose. Bells rang. Whistles blew. Music from Heaven flowed across the land. We had finally found our home. We truly haven’t missed Los Angeles once since that glorious day. Viva la San Jose.San Jose Mexican Restaurant IS MEXICAN FOOD. 100%. This is the flavor that we grew up on and what every other Mexican restaurant in this town lacked. Let’s go through a couple of menu items. No one, and I mean no one in Hampton Roads, makes great ‘chili rellenos’ like San Jose. Their ‘ceviche’ is marvelous as well as their ‘guacamole.’ But, the ‘San Jose Fajitas’ is one of the most spectacular epicurean dishes you can imagine. But be sure to ask for corn rather than flour tortillas. Corn has flavor. Flour is tasteless. (Flour is O.K. to wrap a burrito in, but not to eat with a meal.) Or, if you’re very, very lucky, and Manual’s wife has made tamales that day, you’re in for a taste treat from the gods. So, if you want that real Mexican food taste, go to San Jose. But if you grew up on Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads Mexican, I suppose you’ll never know the depth of what the real Mexican food taste can be, so you can be happy with the other Mexican restaurants in this town.I heartily recommend that you enjoy your meal with one of their large slushy margarita, (On the rocks is a sin.) or a horchata Then, after your repast, for desert enjoy an order of their magical Churros. (I think you get four or five to an order, so your party can each have, just one, and not feel guilty about the calories.)Is everything perfect every time. Of course not! Over the sixteen years we’ve eaten there, naturally we’ve had a bad waiter once or twice, or the food wasn’t as hot as it should have been. But, hey, they’re human, like all of us. Just get up and ask Manual, the owner, or the manager, for another waiter, or send the food back to be re-heated. They truly understand what customer service is all about and will very quickly make it right for you.So, if you don’t think this is one of the best Mexican restaurant on the East Coast, I believe that you just don’t understand what the authentic Mexican taste is, and hey, that’s O.K. You’re just used to growing up on Hampton Roads fare. We’ve eaten there for sixteen years now, so writing this review has been very easy. San Jose is consistently excellent. Five Stars to you Manual and well deserved. Our family looks forward to seeing you soon, again and again.01 Mar, 2014The only Mexican restaurant in Virginia Beach. Hola! Slightly above average for this area. Mexican food in this area is sub par if you compare it to places like Chicago or Washington DC. Worked for an airline as cabin crew for 23 years and been to many places and experience not only different cuisine, but have tasted variations of Mexican cooking. I love Mexican food so, it was somewhat of a let down when we decided to move from Chicago back to this area and try find a good Mexican Restaurant. Have tried several (6 or 7) Mexican restaurants in Virginia Beach alone and had settled with San Jose. Over all, their food is better than what’s available in this area. Plaza Azteca was too noisy and their food was like TV dinners. El Tapatio food is descent, but inconsistent with their drinks. There are regional variations like: the white tangy dip for the chips (only in this area), or some sort of tomato sauce served with Tamales (BTW San Jose does not). Their portions used to be great (now smaller), they removed the guacamole from most their standard dishes and service is as expected.
Came in and ordered a steak taco and a chicken quesadilla. The taco was small but the meat was tasty. As for the quesadilla i Do Not Recommend. The chicken was good but the cheese was Not. One side of the disc was soaked. The cheese breaks aparts. Not good. If you wany a quick taco and dont mind paying $2 sure but anything else is questionable.
Our first time coming in here Great Food ! Great Service! We will come back !
Don’t quite get it.. I’ve eaten here a couple times now (went considerably out of my way both times, based on the reviews here), and can’t see what everyone is so excited about. Completely average Mexican food and subpar service.
I love this place!! I was so upset when my husband was stationed here, we’re from Texas and I LOVE my tex-mex- and this is the only place ive found that has cheese enchiladas that taste like they do in Texas.. Not exactly the same but closest Ive found in Virginia!!
It was great… My boyfriend and I frequented there 2-3 times a week. And then we got accused of not paying for 2 beers the last time we went that we never even ordered, & then the older waitress called us drunks in Spanish stating that’s why we couldn’t remember. We didn’t even have much to drink… I used to recommend this place all the time, however sadly, we will not be back. These people are very judging and only care about your money… Not hospitality.
