Amuse is what I guess you’d expect from a museum restaurant. It really wants to be something special but just doesn’t have the volume to quite make it. On the top floor of the museum’s back side it’s appealing with the full long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and white walls and modern (read simple) appearance. There is a huge deck outside, too, but it’s rarely open. The menu is limited, never seems to change and on our latest visit today the menu seemed even smaller. Most of what’s offered is tasty but not surprisingly so and that makes the limited menu even more limited. There’s nothing on it that you’d order a second time. Portions are on the small side but I’ve never left hungry (although I have left without being satisfied and wondering where to go next). The wait staff is fine but after more than a dozen visits I can’t recall a single time the service was more than fine. On our last visit we were seated for the first time in the back room. While a bit quieter than the main room it was a bit stuffy and felt crowded and isolated.Bottom line for me: it is very unlikely that I’ll make an effort visit again.
I love Amuse — wonderful Thanksgiving day meal (our turkey day is Sat) — wonderful food — wonderful service — RVA is so lucky
