Vegan cookies and cream cupcake… I wasn’t ready for all that yumminess! (Yeah I made that word up) AMAZING!
More Fake, Less Cake. Carytown Cupcakes is a charming, if sterile, little shop. Contemporary music piped out of a rather nice set of outdoor speakers beckons you in from the sidewalk of Cary Street. The pink and white shabby chic style decor and displays of beautifully decorated princess-themed cupcakes, however, are some of the nicest things about this cupcakerie. I’ve been to Carytown Cupcakes several times, each time hoping that this cake would be the cake that lives up to the hype. And while the carrot cake cupcake is consistently moist and nicely textured, I feel I have been let down in every other respect. Maybe it’s just me, but I think that if you go through the hassle of starting a retail shop for your cupcake dream, charging upwards of $3 per tiny cake, the least you could do is make sure that your cupcakes are consistently delicious. Having sampled several of the flavors over the past two years, I find that the cake texture is often dry and crumbly, and the icing without fail melts in the box on the walk home. The specialty cakes have little flavor – a black pepper strawberry cake a year back back disappointed immensely. Instead of fixing the recipe, they dropped the cake entirely off the menu and replaced it with some vegan or gluten free raspberry looking things I have yet mustered up the courage or cash to try. By all means, continue to go to Carytown Cupcakes for your carryout cup-sized confections, but you might also want to try out Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe on Grove Ave for better quality or Dixie Donuts in Carytown for more interesting flavors.
Avoid. You’re better off with a box mix from a grocery store. Dry, bland, overpriced. I seriously do not understand how this place stays in business. There are SO many better places to get dessert in Carytown.
Friendly, fun atmosphere. Great new space. Most of all delicious variety of cupcakes. They even get vegan and gluten free perfect!!
A good cupcake. I will admit that these cupcakes are good. I just won’t a make a drive out to get one, well unless I’m in Carytown for something else.
Nothing to brag about. The cupcakes are ok but not anything great. I feel they are overpriced
There is nothing special about these cupcakes. For the most part the flavors were bland and tasted like they came from a box. Also not very much of a selection. Came in after lunch around noon and the cupcakes were stale. Wouldn’t recommend this place.
