I had an enjoyable evening. Stopped in on a Tuesday night en route from Norfolk to Alexandria. Colonial style architecture. Neat and clean and modern. A nice setting in the small town of New Kent Courthouse. Lots of windows. Found it by accident after diverting off I64 to avoid traffic. Staff was attentive, but as a small restaurant with few customers in a small town, there was only 1 waitress/hostess on staff. Good thing it wasn’t crowded, but service was fine. I found the menu reasonably priced. Entrees ranged from $15-20. Specials were a couple of dollars more but under $25. I was first served some warm spoon bread and butter. I never had this before and found it warm and moist with a flavor like cornbread. It was good. In lieu of an entree I decided to have 2 appetizers. I had the crab Napoleon – a mini crab cake served between 2 fried green tomatoe slices with remoulade and tartar sauces. This was really good and priced fairly at $8.50. My other item was the shrimp and grits. This was mild – not spicy like in many other restaurants. The grits were creamy – more like risotto. The dish was a grit cake with 3 boiled (plain) shrimp around it with sliced ham and chopped bacon. And the sauce was like a hollandaise but creamier and not as thick. It was very good and priced at $8.50. I thought the ham slices (like cold cut meat) was a poor addition – the chef should drop the ham altogether in favor of smoked bacon. But I was good and I liked it. I enjoyed the overall experience and will be back.
Was very disappointed when I ordered the cottage pie (shepherds) and it had bell peppers in it. They were not listed in the menu, so I ordered a burger which took well over 20 minutes to get very disorganized serving staff
