I was looking forward to trying out this diner which I had read was the place to go in Ghent. It was hotter inside than it was outside. I get it’s an old building and has that classic small diner feel, but it definitely needs to enter the 21st century with an upgrade in its air-conditioning system. I was immediately disappointed when I tried ordering a Bloody Mary off their menu and was informed that they no longer serve alcohol as they are working on changing over their alcohol license. I’m beginning to wonder if they had a license in the first place and were serving alcohol without one. I ordered a make-your-own omelette with ham, American cheese and potatoes with a side of applesauce and a biscuit. My omelette had the ham and cheese, but the potatoes were on the side, not in the omelette and I never received the applesauce. The omelette was definitely fluffy like other reviewers wrote, but it was swimming in grease as well as the potatoes. The biscuit was ok, but had been placed next to the greasy omelette, thus absorbing oil and was a soggy, greasy mess. The place was packed, so they must be doing something right, but definitely got it wrong for me.
Stopped into the original location for the first time today for late breakfast. Pretty much everything about it is perfect – size, atmosphere, food, waitstaff. It’s Norfolk’s version of the famous Lou Henri’s in Iowa City 🙂 I ordered eggs and links, with some deliciously creamy grits. While waiting for my order (I sat at the counter), I saw the cook plate up the fluffiest omelet I have EVER seen! Will definitely stop in again next week for that omelet!
