For gods sake. If you are a Richmond foodie; that is to say someone who enjoys a good meal, the last place you will eat is Sam Miller’s. It does have an historic location, but the food is overpriced dreck. It exists for the unsuspecting and visitors who don’t know better. The lunch burger is good, but, of course, its way overpriced. Avoid this craphole. You’re better off at Red Lobster.
I am surprised to see the low rating here. I have to admit when we eat here we usually eat appetizer-ish, like raw oysters, shrimp etc and really like it! Being big fans of restaurant week we decided to give them a try on real food as the menu options were so compelling. We did have a service issue regarding our wine order and when we got out bill and the wine was not on there we flagged down the manager. She did actually comp us the bottle of wine. When we dine out we do not expect anything for free, rather we just want it right. This was over the top as we did enjoy the wine although were annoyed about not having it in time for our apps.OK so food. Restaurant week portions vary a lot between venues, these portions were perfect. Started with oysters Rockefeller, not wonderful but not bad, and bacon wrapped shrimp, very good. I have 1/2 of a very fresh lobster(saw it being carried back to the kitchen alive) stuffed with a so so crab stuffing, really yummy fried corn, and asparagus. Hubby had a nice piece of tuna, served with potatoes and broccolini, very good. Took home our desserts of bread pudding and cheese cake quite awesome.
Great Service / Bad Food. Great bread. Shrimp Imperial horrible. Overcooked shrimp the size of cocktail shrimp with average crab topping (not jumbo lump, just flakes). VERY overpriced for quality. But service was great.
Crap Dip!. I love their crab dip.. its amazing! The bar is great too! 🙂
Watch Out!!!. If you value your money or your sanity, avoid this place. The bartenders & barbacks stare right through you and don’t give you service while having conversations amongst themselves. They also require u hold a tab w/ a credit card, which they preemptively run to make sure you have the cash, and forget to delete after you’ve paid in cash!! So you pay twice, on top of a good tip, and possibly an overdraft fee on a card you hadn’t been planning to use, just to hold the tab with. Also, if your with more than one person splitting a tab, they’ll charge the wrong card for the wrong amount & try to justify the confusion later. Steer clear of this plce, where the customer is never right!
Worst Ever. My girlfriend and I went there for a late lunch as we live in the Manchester District and it was not far. Let me say, this is potentially the worst food I have ever had at a restaurant…that should frame it up for you. I had the fish and Chips while my girlfriend had the Italian melt with fries, and we both shared the crab bisque soup. The soup was not that bad. It had a homey full flavor to it, but was not amazing. I did not sweat this because I believe we have all been to restaurants where the soup was so-so but the entrees were outstanding. For the Fish and Chips, the fish was a flavorless flounder that was deep fried too oblivion. It came as 5 small pieces which resembled chicken wings and breast…which suggests the cook just tore of the meat from a filet and nuked it. The chips (fries) were soggy, covered in oil without the slightest frying. I was surprised with the amount of frying done to the flounder that they couldn’t have at least burnt the fries in the deep fryer. Moving on to the melt, the fries were prepared the same way. The sandwich was a turkey and salami melt (but it looked and tasted like ham). The melting must have been done in a microwave because the bread was soggy as well and cheese hardly melted …though there was not enough cheese to cover the half pound of meat even if it had melted. The sandwich was then most likely thrown on the press for just enough time to leave grill marks then was plated…we both work in restaurants, I in a kitchen, so we understand that food is not always perfect but this was not acceptable. I know the shortcuts people can take in the kitchen and it appears as though the cook took every single one possible. Perhaps it was also the fact that it was 2pm and in many kitchens this is a dead time and the workers just want to leave. I understand, yet this will still go down as one of the worst meals I ever had. The service was acceptable and she gladly offered to remove the food from our bill. We told her not to worry, but to pass the message along to the kitchen.
Worst service I’ve ever experienced. Drinks didn’t arrive ’til after appetizers. 2 of 4 orders were incorrect. Price was too high for quality of food and bad service.
