Will not be going back. This restaurant is over-hyped. We had all heard how great it is. From our first glance at the menu it was a disappointment. The choices are very limited. The food was bland, the service mediocre and the portions are small. There were five in our party and we all agreed that this would be our only visit to Southbound.
Good food, nice staff. I was excited to try this place, so I made a reservation at 715 on a Tuesday night. The space is very attractive, but my oh my, is it ever loud! I could barely hear my two companions or the waiter! I think that may keep me from being a frequent visitor. The food took quite a while to appear, but our waiter kept us plied with cocktails, beer and water. I had the tile fish, which was very good. My brother had the pasta with pesto, and my niece had the fried chicken sandwich. We all cleaned our plates. Oh, and the list of old fashioned cocktails was fun. I had a Brown Derby, while my brother had a local lager from Ashland. All of the staff was friendly and accommodating. Really, my only complaint was the noise level.
Very Good! Will Definitely Return!. My husband and I made a reservation for a Sunday nite. We were seated promptly and we liked that the tables weren’t too close. We tried the wings – thought they were way too heavy on the teriyaki – but that was the main ingredient so maybe it’s just our taste. However, our entrees, the double cheese burger and the trout were absolutely fabulous. Both are worth having again and we would highly recommend them both. The service was very good and our server John, was knowledgeable and very accommodating. My husband liked the apple crisp very much. I had the pecan chocolate tart. The filling was good, although the addition of sorghum is not my taste. The crust was just plain terrible. Even so – the entrees and the service would definitely merit a return visit!
Went to dinner here last night. I was surprised it had a huge square bar that took up half the floor area of the facility. The bar was packed creating an extremely loud atmosphere. As a result the place desperately needs acoustic tiles on the ceiling. Also the chairs at the tables are just flat wood, something I wouldn’t expect in a high end restaurant – cushions would help. The food was excellent, well prepared with quality ingredients. Southside and chesterfield certainly can use a first class bar. Just be aware that this is a big, popular bar that serves great food, not a comfortable restaurant. I probably won’t be back.
Very poor food. Good atmosphere. Olivia, the bartender, is great.
Good but won’t be a regular. As I expected, the food was really good. We went on a Wednesday at around 7:15 and had about an hour wait. The service was excellent and the bartender made sure we were comfortable during the long wait. The food was great….tuna appetizer was perfect but portion was a bit small. The oysters were fantastic and the rock fish was great but again, small portion for the price. The atmosphere is very open and loud. I would prefer a more intimate setting. I was hoping it would be more of a casual neighborhood restaurant that you go to every couple of weeks but I will probably go a couple of times a year. The crowd on this night was mostly seniors. It is not the kind of kid friendly place I expected….not that it matters to me but that was the way it was described in some articles.
Great dinner and service, nice environment. I was curious to see how the place would straddle the line of offering both a contemporary dining experience and being kid friendly. It worked. We’d made an early reservation online for 2 adults + a toddler. They had a highchair in place for us when we arrived, and were attentive to our needs as parents. The table was spaces so that our active little boy was not a bother to other patrons, and we able to really enjoy our meal. The food was similar but different from the offerings at Roosevelt and Heritage. It is solid good, and I look forward to what these guys can make when they’ve really had a chance to work together. Didn’t try the cocktails or beer, but the wine list is nice. Southbound is off to a good start.
