My husband & I had Christmas Eve Dinner with our Oldest son and his wife last night at The Berkeley. This was our 1st time dining with you. We were very disappointed in our meals. The filets were undercooked and actually cold when they were served. We sent them back and they still came back bloody red. My son sent his back a 2nd time, I just decided not to eat mine. The waitress was very apologetic and just offered to cook my son another dish, which they did but by the time it came everyone else had finished eating. The restaurant is very quaint and beautiful but the food left a lot to be desired. The bill was very pricey so needless to say we were very disappointed and would not recommend this for a future visit.
Leaves much to be desired. My wife and I dined here on April 17th, 2013. We were the only table with 3 persons at the bar. We ordered rib eye steaks. Steaks served were NY strips which were not cooked as ordered and were not even on the menu. Waiter was very nice and acknowledged that the correct order was not strips. Steaks were not of great quality. Dropped the cost of one steak from the bill. All other restaurants in the area were busy. Now we know why the Berkeley is not. I noted recently that there was a new chef. She has her work cut out to rebuild a customer base. With all the competition, this will be tough to do. The atmosphere is great but the food falls below acceptable standards. High price limited menu will not cut it. Expand menu, small plates, after work specials to attract customers and then serve good quality food. Just sayin! For example- Ruth’s Chris offers 1/2 price appetizers and drinks from 4-6:30 in the bar. Great food! Attracts a good crowd.
Bad night at the Berkeley. My wife and I were disappointed in our meal at the Berkeley Dining Room. My wife was served a filet that was under cooked (to her request), was very small for even a filet and worse yet, it had gone rancid! It both smelled bad and tasted bad and should have been discovered in the kitchen. It was returned and another meal was subsituted. I was served a rib eye that was not shaped like any rib eye cut that I have ever seen. It looked like a strip steak. It was full of grizzle and tasteless. You could hear the knife saw through the cut. I ate very little and we called it a night. The wait staff was fine, the atmosphere is excellent, But there were no customers on a Saturday night. I think I know the reason now.
Re: sourness. I don’t normally reply to reviews, but :We did 73 covers that night (including 17 orders of snapper) and the ONLY negative comment came from the previous reviewer (who btw arrived for dinner wearing dirty jeans and a hoppy-smelling sweatshirt : yes, we remember you). I personally prepared the dishes he and his wife ordered, and I am absolutely certain that everything was very fresh and delicious. We did refuse to give them their dinner for free … but I suspect that a free meal was what they really wanted all along. M. McClureExecutive Chef The Berkeley Hotel
Sourness. Server was great, but the food was awful. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits; I ordered the red snapper with rice. Both dishes had a very bizarre sour odor and flavor to them; almost like sandwich meat that had gone bad. The rice with the snapper looked and tasted like overcooked rice-a-roni. The grits were completely flavorless, and had a microwaved, instant-cooked texture to them, almost like undercooked instant oatmeal. What’s worse is that after sending it back, the waitress informed us that her food manager and chef both thought the dishes were fine, and would do nothing for us. The combined total of the dishes added up to $50, and they were worth less than a 99 cent cheeseburger.
Restaurant week? At this place it should be spelled w-e-a-k. The garden salad was limp and thrown together so that no self reapecting rabbit would even look at it twice. The seafood and grits was a disaster with one of the two medium sized shrimp still sporting the vein while the lonely single scallop had no color and can only be described as mealy. Throw in the stereotypical smarmy waiter and you have the perfect storm for an absolutely forgetable dining experience. Never again.
Reliable. Not enough Richmonders think of this place for dinner – as evidenced by the fact that we were one of 3 tables occupied on a Saturday night. My wife and I have been twice and very pleased with the meals both times. New winter menu looks great. Filet with fois gras was delicious and seafood stew was great on a cold night. They appear to be trimming a bit, however. On our last visit, they had a sommelier. Not so any more. The staff seemed a bit inattentive considering how few tables there were. It is a very nice setting and great food. Plus watching the people going in/out of the Tobacco Company bar on the cobblestones is amusing.
