So sad. This used to be the best place to get a crab cake. Lump crabmeat, just enough filler to hold it together. Notice the word USED to be. Last 3 times we ordered we got crab stuffing, not a crab cake. Could not find one single lump of crab meat. Still good chowder and oysters and shrimp. Just avoid the crab. I understand you want to keep cost down, but go back to what you used early last year.
Last night, my girlfriend and I dined at the station with some friends. From the outside, the Smithfield Station looks like it would be a fine place to eat…based on our experience, it was anything but. It’s only fair to point out that there was some sort of festive activities going on because it was the day before the 4th of July and it is possible that the restaurant was affected….that being said, there is no excuse for providing customers with a subpar dining experience at a premium price. Upon walking into the Smithfield Station, we were immediately hit with a heat wave. It was very hot and muggy out, and the waiting area of the restaurant was no different. While waiting for our table to be prepared, my girlfriend and myself made quick visits to the restroom and both of us found them to be extremely hot and not overly well maintained. (Keep in mind that a chicken entree costs $25 here). Luckily, once we were taken into the dining area, you could actually feel the AC and it was quite comfortable. Once we sat down, the views were so-so considering the amazing location of the restaurant and the decor was just okay. I must point out that our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The service was nothing to complain about whatsoever. My girlfriend ordered the Top Sirloin with Shrimp Scampi and I ordered the Jambalaya. When the food arrived, the shrimp in both of our dishes were extremely undercooked. They were clear and gray. My girlfriend did enjoy her steak, but was underwhelmed with her spoonful of mashed potatoes and unflavored, waxy green beans. My Jambalaya was not particularly flavorful and at one point, I bit into quite a large chicken bone that was present. We did not try dessert, but our friends did and they really looked good. Personally, we will never be going back.
We visited here Fri night for my birthday based on reccomendations from friends, I was hesitant because of some of the reviews but I’m glad we went. The view was lovely, the service was friendly, helpful and efficient. My husband and I split the coconut shrimp appetizer and it was fabulous. Fresh, big, firm shrimp in a delicious coconut batter. I had the filet mignon and it came out over cooked, but they took it back and quickly returned with a perfectly cooked steak. It was tender and delicious. Not the best I’ve ever had but very good, especially for the price! My husband had crab stuffed mushrooms and loved them.
Disappoints. This place looks so good from the outside. It’s in a picturesque location in a quaint little historic town. However, the food and service will disappoint you. The food, for the most part, is just sysco stuff that they heat up. They don’t make much of their food from scratch. I can’t say I’ve ever had anything ‘bad’ here, but even though I’ve been here at least a half dozen times, I can’t remember one dish that was good. What is disappointing as well is that you pay a premium price for very average food. If you are ok for paying premium prices for a great atmosphere but very mediocre food, this place is for you. If not, you will be disappointed.
I love the Inner Banks. Smithfield Station is a great place. They do everything well. I love the Shrimp and Grits there. They are fantastic! The service is always so pleasant. You cant go wrong with the Station. Give them a shot. ANd if your from out of town, they have an awesome hotel connected too. Nice job Smithfield Station!
Great place to eat. Smithfield Station is a great place to eat. Let’s be honest, Virginia isn’t known as a great food place so if you’re comparing it to a similar place in New Orleans you’re going to be left wanting. The food is good though. I typically get the flounder with crab and it’s always good. Nice portion as well. The wait staff is always great and so is the bar. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the views, especially at sunset, are awesome. If you’re a food snob, go somewhere else; you probably aren’t happy anywhere.
