Hello, We had our fancy d…. Hello,We had our fancy dinner at Acacia. Very glad we tried it, probably won’t go back though very expensive. The positives:They had valet parking but we didn’t need it we found a spot one block awayHad a reservation so got seated right awayAwesome fried oysters for appetizerI had 2 crab cakes that were all lump crab and deliciousHad grouper and enjoyed it with lentils. The cons:Got filet with a weird ‘house’ sauce with a very over powering and pleasing sauce (bbq/ketchup/vinegar) but he said the beef was very good.I ordered a house Merlot that did not taste very good and the bouquet was kind of mildewy ordered a house cabernet and it was $15/glass.
Pretentious atmosphere and staff, bland food. Ate there last night (1/31/14). Found the wait staff at the bar extremely pretentious about the restaurant and their menu. The menu was not varied at all, the portions were very small, and sadly the food was bland. Very disappointed.
Acacia Awarded Most Pretentious Condescending Staff. Acacia Midtown wins another Award – 2013 Richmonds Most Pretentious Condescending StaffWhat an evening of contrasts. We started last Friday evening at the Viceroy and later met friends at Acacia Midtown. The staff at the Viceroy were just as friendly and engaging as weve experienced in the past. We had a drink and shared several appetizers. As we were getting ready to leave friends called and asked if we would like to meet at Acacia Midtown. At Acacia, we were seated at the bar as our friends arrived. The bar was fairly quite. As we arrived the two people to our left moved to their table. The only other people at the bar were two women seated at the far end. We generally set at the bar, usually finding it to be more friendly and social. My friend and I ordered bottle of Tempranillo and our friends ordered drinks and reviewed the menu. As they ordered food, we decided to sample the Seared Tuna. At that time we were asked if we wanted to move to a table. We unanimously declined. Then the Bartender, who we were told later was a manager, informed us that the policy was that they do not serve four people at the bar. My reply was then well just have the wine. The Bartender made some condescending remark regarding that its to protect the bar for those patrons that that would like to drink and not being able to set. We suggested that we could move if others arrived, he declined. I then mentioned that another option would be that we could simply get the check and go somewhere else to eat. The Bartender replied that if that is what you prefer, let it be done. We then moved to a table, as I no longer wanted to be served by such a smug and arrogant bartender. Since we were seated, we all ended up ordering food. The Seared Tuna was visually pleasant but completely without flavor. My friends Chicken entre was over-salted but equally attractive. I do understand that food that is visually pleasing enhances the taste but it cannot overcome mediocre food regardless of what you want to believe. The waitress was doing her best to hurry us along, removing two of our four wine glasses with wine still in the glasses. During our meal, we noticed that not a single person sat at the bar. The only two patrons at the bar during our meal were the two women, still seated at the end of the bar. I do not have an issue with the policy in general. Ive too have experienced a bar full of people eating entres, avoiding the wait for a table, when you want to grab a drink at a friendly bar. However, I do believe its best to apply some discretion when applying policies. The four of us sitting and enjoying drinks at the bar and having appetizers would have generated greater revenue than moving us to a table. Especially considering that it was my friends first visit and most likely the last for the four of us.Congratulations, you win! Food 1 of 5, Service/Staff 0 of 5, Decor 4of 5
Crab cakes were unreal. Everyone says they have the best, but paired with a soft shell crab these were unreal. Creative drinks and knowledge bar tender made the experience even better. Had to park in the ghetto which is the only draw back.
Under seasoned, undercooked scallops. Pasty gnocchi. Over rated and overpriced. Blah.
RVA Restaurant Week. Gnocchi Vert with Sauted Shrimp was UNREAL! The shrimp were cooked to perfection- literally! The most delectable I have had in a really long time. The gnocchi had an amazing flavor. They extracted the chlorophyll from something and added it to the gnocchi which gave it this really cool color! I could have eaten enough to feed 5 people. Rockfish was okay- kind of a plain dish which surprised me considering how much flavor the first course had. Brownie was an upset. They opened a box of Duncan Hines. I really expected more. My guess is they do not have a pastry chef on staff.. To the restaurant- if you are going to used box brownies, Ghirardelli Double Choc and Williams-Sonoma Baked (from Brooklyn) Brownies are the best I have had.
Overall, I thought our break was excellent. As other commented noted, the servers tag-teamed somewhat, bit I thought that was a good thing, they all work well with each other and the end result was very prompt service. My fiance had an excellent salad, and a vegetarian entree created out of three sides. We both loved the mac and cheese (perfectly made with gruyere) and the broccolini. she loved the btussel sprouts but I thought they were just ok. I had the rockfish and it was amazing. the french toast dessert was good but not great. The decor is extremely well done, and all the areas seemed very friendlyIn general, this is now one of our favorite places for fine dining on Richmond.
