I enjoy the great good fortune of living around the corner from this not-well-enough-known little epicurean Shangri-La. Originally,we patronized them out of some necessity. Now? It’s our great pleasure to wander down the alley and see what’s on the board. As an avid craft cocktail consumer, I am never disappointed with the bar. The specialty cocktails are delicious and favorably priced (important if you’re going to have 2 or 4. Or 5). The specials board is crammed with fresh inventive dishes to tempt the pickiest of locavores. Don’t miss their take on the jalapeo popper… It’s all grown up at Savory Grain. They pickle and cure and make so much in house – you’ll never get that metallic tang of packaged food. The staff is nice and welcoming – Jamie the owner is usually present and on the floor. For date night, family dinner, meeting up with friends for a drink and a catch-up…this is your place.

Total Disregard. Never mind the food. Long story short, our party of four was completely ignored for an hour and 15 minutes after having been told the wait was 20 minutes. We surrendered to their ineptitude and our appetites and eventually just ordered dinner at the bar, a $130.00 tab that would have been better spent in the many Richmond restaurants who are attentive and truthful about wait times. Never again.

Food and Service were both great. Sausage dip, hamburger, shrimp & grits, desserts – all hits.

Second visit, another pleasant experience. Went here last night and had another great experience. I love the decor and atmosphere- and easy parking. Even on Sunday they had great drink specials before 7 pm. We got complimentary bread to go with our drinks, which was excellent I think it was a jalapeno flavor and a pumpkin flavor. Entrees we ordered: Shrimp and grits add bacon, this was a great take on shrimp and grits I think I had 7 shrimps and well more than a dollar worth of bacon (it was a dollar to add) the grits were well cooked and the sauce tasty. I’m glad it came with toast points to soak up the sauce! My date had the burger add egg and bacon, loved it said the egg was perfect not to cooked not too runny, and really enjoyed the mixture of meat in the patty: Angus chuck, brisket & short rib. Our server was attentive and helpful, overall great experience!

Worth the detour. After seeing a few dishes posted on Instagram (found by searching #RVA), we detoured to The Savory Grain on a trip from OH to GA. We arrived at the tail end of the Sunday brunch hour, pleased that we hadn’t missed the live music (guitar and upright bass jazz). We took seats at the bar, and were quickly given waters and menus. Our order consisted of an artisan salad with applewood smoked bacon, and carrot cake pancakes. Not so great: the salad arrived with ham, not the bacon requested. Great: the pancakes were surprisingly, and refreshingly, not-too-sweet. While we enjoyed watching the bartenders hustle to keep up with the steady crowd, sitting at the bar didn’t award us the best service, and water glasses weren’t refilled and we were not asked if our order was to our satisfaction. That said, while the service was a little lacking, the fare was delicious. If I were a Richmond local, I could see going back for sure.
