A truly fun experience with good, but not great, food. My husband took me to A Chefs Kitchen for my birthday and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The funny thing is the food wasn’t all that great, but the overall experience was fantastic. The venue has three rows of tables and chairs that face the kitchen and the two chefs (think a college lecture hall or Food Network show). As the chefs prepare the meal, they talk to the diners and explain what they are doing, the ingredients they use (and dont use), and how you can make the dishes yourself. They even give you recipes for the dishes that you can take home with you. Both chefs were friendly and knowledgeable and interacted wonderfully with the diners. Perhaps a draw-back to this format is that the menu is set and you are served the one dish per course that is on the menu, but the menu for the month is posted on the restaurants website so you know well in advance what will be served. The evening starts with champagne and small hors d’oeuvres and is followed by a five-course meal and three wines picked to complement the course with which they are served. All in all, I thought the food was certainly good, but not great. Put it this way, if the dishes were regular menu items at another restaurant, I would have been mostly satisfied with them, but would order something else the next time. The wines too were certainly serviceable, but I will not seek them out to purchase. Overall, the evening was a fun and entertaining three-hour event, and the experience as a whole was well worth the price.

A Gem of a Restaurant.. As a Christmas gift, our 6 person family (myself, wife, two adult children with spouses) went to A Chef’s Kitchen on a Saturday in April. It was one of the most enjoyable evenings we have ever spent together. Bravo Zulu to John Gonzales and staff – the venue and idea is a gem in Williamsburg and must be experienced! The food, wine and cooking information were all top notch and well worth the price. The appertizers and opening sparkling wine were good, but only a preview of the night to come. The Asparagus and Leek Soup with White Truffle Oil was OUTSTANDING and really a big hit with our entire family. The grilled Romaine salad added an interesting and delightful touch to lettuce that needs something else. The corn bread was delicious and we can’t wait to try this recepie out for ourselves. One of the nice parts of this experience is you get all the recipes that were cooked that night and a different flightm of wine for each course. The Flounder with seared fennel was perfectly cooked – moist and flavorful and would top any 5-star restaurant rendition. The rack of lamb was the only course that wasn’t something to rave over. While the New Zealand lamb was good and perfectly cooked (medium rare) and the brussels sprouts and smashed potatoes were very good, it didn’t seem that special (maybe I was too full from all the previous course and wine). The strawberry mascarpone cheesecake with chocolate ganache was a little dry for my taste – but I finished it all and it was a good finish to the night.John Gonzales is a great cook and a credible entertainer. If you enjoy watching any show on the Food Channel, you’ll love this experience. We will definitely be back for an encore presentation.
I would pay $100 per seat. ‘Nuff said.13 Apr, 2011Great Value. As always, the food is awesome. Don’t bother looking over the menu before you go because no matter what is on the menu, you will not be dissatisfied. Also, don’t be deterred by the price per seat. This is truly an all-inclusive price for three hours of entertainment, outstanding food and wine and a learning experience. Everyone I have invited to join us has raved about the place and returned with friends of their own because a place this good is to hard to keep to yourself.
A Must In Williamsburg. This was a surprise for my wife, tried for 10 days to get in. Limited seating, as this is an instructional dinner you wont forget. Well worth the price and the food was excellant.
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. This was the most outstanding dining experience we have ever had. Make reservations now!
