Nothin’ Fancy. There is nothing fancy about the Retro except the taste. Great dogs, hand-cut fries, and the custard……AMAZING! The custard has the flavor of frozen whipped cream. I really enjoyed my visit. PLEASE BRING BACK THE MONSTER DOG!
Great hot dogs, root beer on the tap, and fried pickles. Fried just right, not greasy. Not baby friendly. No high chairs, tight space for families, limited seating, and no changing stations in the restrooms. Made for an awkward dining experience.
Not so good. Food was mediocore at best. Gravy was from can, loaded potato had few toppings for size and cheese is out of can. burger was frozen patty and flavorless. Meatloaf was small, burned and flavorless. save your money eat somewhere else.
Our local spot. Only been here twice but my kids and I are going to make this place a regular spot for us. Burgers and hot dogs were great and they let you write on the chalk board.
Okay Food, Small Portions. I am sure this is one of the cheaper places to eat in Williamsburg, but buyer beware! The portion-to-price ratio is out of whack! We got the fish & chips blue plate special – costing $6.99 – and the limeade – around $2.50. The limeade was a fair size for the price, but the fish & chips was about the smallest portion I’ve ever seen. We got three medium-sized fish strips and about 15 regular-cut fries with the meal. As a reference point: I usually get 3 large fish strips and about 40 to 50 regular-cut fries at Beff O’Brady’s* for $7.99! Overall, the food was okay – nothing to tell your friends about – and the portions were small. We didn’t have any problems with the service and our order was ready in about 5 minutes. *I do not and have not ever worked for Beff O’Brady’s.
Like home cooking. Retros good eats is just that, good food in an endless sea of williamsburg restaurants which feel the need to mess with simple things that work (grapes and pecans in chicken salad, sprouts, apples, and guacamole on a turkey sanwich). Their fresh cut fries prove simple is better. Not saying that their isnt a time and place for cuisine, but keep your goat cheese away from my hamburger. Where other nostalgia restaurants miss the boat with shippen in frozen foods Retros original recipies do it with love the old fashioned way. Go figure, cooking going on in a fast food kitchen.
Small Burgers. Today, 8/20/09 was my 5th time eating at Retro’s. The only thing I have ever had there was the Cheeseburger and Fries. On each occasion, i have made the following determination. I always have a bunch of fries left over but my burger is all gone. Mind you, With Lettuce, Tomato and Mayo, my sandwich came up to $4.09 + tax. I approached the Manager with my dilemma, he simply stated that the the burger is 1/4 before it’s cooked and recommended that I try the Hot dog. Well, I am not really a hot dog person, but the Cheeseburger is really, really good. I just wish it was bigger, or at least offered in a different weight. Nevertheless, I can go to Wendy’s and more bang for my buck because I just had the fries and burger and my total was $7.12…..And I didn’t even get a fountain drink. I drank water. I may be back, but only when they offer their burger in a bigger size.
