After going to Hitchcock for lunch we walked over to Blackbird Bakery. It wasin the afternoon and there were no pastries left but we had a coupon and took a small flatbread pizza home for later. The flatbread had spinach, cheese and red bell pepper on it (picture posted). It was a nice light meal.Service was good.
A visit to Bainbridge would not be complete without dropping into Blackbird for coffee and a pastry. Though the wait for a coffee can seem kind of long, it is well worth it.Beyond the usual baked goods I’d also recommend walking out with a loaf of whole wheat bread, challah, pie, or the house made granola.
I am local. Eat there pretty often. Good but not great pastries. Limited seating. Very slow counter help. No credit cards. In short, decent but not remarkable. Worth a stop if you want food to snack on or want to sit down and the line is short. Otherwise you’ll be standing waiting for ten minutes or more.
Good place for gluten free treats.
Blackbird – If you find yourself on Bainbridge, worth a visit.. After reading the comments of a few reviewers who decided it would be acceptable to insult the majority of Blackbird customers and employees, I thought I’d offer a less biased and more realistic perspective of the situation:Blackbird Bakery is home to a selection of great pastries and baked goods made by hand in back of the establishment, with a younger core of staffers that truly are on the hipster side. However, if you wake up for your morning cup of Joe and don’t attempt to engage yourself with the employees, than what else would you expect than ‘minimal’ conversation from the Barista? I’ve been to Blackbird many times over the past 10 or so years, never once encountering bad customer service. The wait times can vary, but you must remember that there are only 3 people staffing the front at most, and one is a Barista and another on the register at all times. The coffee is good, and if you want it hot than make sure you’re stern about it just like any other location. The baked goods are good, the toast, yes the toast, is great. The location is great; those who fault Winslow for it’s size are living in sheer ignorance of the fact that this is Bainbridge Island, not Seattle. I have lived in both places, and I wouldn’t for a second move back to Seattle. Those who bash the residents as ‘Whitebread’ or ‘Totally spoiled’ are hiding in their own fault… The people who live here are not showered in old money, there is amazing talent on the island that has earned it’s way to the forefront of their respective fields and they deserve to live how they want, whether it be buying exotic cars and huge homes, or a small and cozy abode on the interior of Eagle Harbor.Blackbird is well worth the trip, coming from someone who has traveled to the corners of the globe in every manner there is. It’s the simple things that matter, like a cup of coffee and a nice scone.
Reviewers are correct. Baked goods are of good quality (the metropolitans and lemon bread in particular) and the apathetic service by Bainbridge hipsters (cough) is appallingly bad.
