Love the location and vibe of Essex. Great spot for a date. Staff was helpful. The tomato salad was beautiful and delicious. Best thing we had here. The drinks were not great. Very syrupy. Ordered the Essex burger because we have heard great things. It had wonderful texture and feel. Looked amazing too. One problem though. It was sooo spicy! Way too spicy. Neither of us could really taste anything. I feel like the ingredients were probably great, but the spice overpowered anything that might have been there. Such a bummer.
Delicious all around. I’ve been a fan for Delancy Pizza, and had Essex on my cocktail wishlist for a long time. The interior of the restaurant was lovely & intimate. We had the pleasure of sitting at the bar and chatting with a very knowledgable bartender who shared his expertise on developing flavors in liqueurs (try their in-house elderflower recipe). We had cocktails and a few bar bites including prosciutto w/ grilled pear and their homemade pretzels. A brilliant happy hour experience off the beaten path. It is a must!
Tasty coctails, very good food. Tasty, inventive cocktails, wine, and beer with good bar food: homemade pretzels with homemade mustard, a selection of cheeses and salumi by the ounce, lots of pickled things, and a couple big plates. Over two days (the soft opening and opening night) I have had three of the cocktails: Red Medicine (rye-based), 70th St. Sour (rye again), and Private Eyes (tequila). All were excellent, with good-quality liquor and most often homemade bitters. Everything in the drinks is freshly made: no margarita mix here. Pretzels are the chewy / salty kind rather than the sweeter / fluffier kind, started in a convection oven and finished in the pizza oven, per a server. Pretty good service, especially for a crowded, lively opening night. Nice ambiance, with marble mar tops and table tops, subway tile back wall, and walnut bar shelves and banquette. Two caveats: first, excellent quality and homemade products come at a price, and it isn’t cheap, with cocktails around $10-11: two cocktails and pretzels came to $27 before tax and tip. Second, with Delancey next door and popular, parking is now very tight in the neighborhood — if you also like the nearby Barking Dog, you will know what I mean.
