Two Visits, Only One Good Dish.Weve been here twice. The first time we didnt like it at all, but we decided to give it another try. After all, its survived even though its across the street from Wonderful Buffet, a very large Chinese Buffet that seems to be wildly popular even though it isnt that wonderful. China Palace must be doing something right. Right? We started with the Seafood Soup. Our server warned us that the seafood was only crab- no shrimp, fish, etc. It turned out to be egg drop soup with tofu and canned crab: edible, but not really very good. Then we had three dishes: BBQ Duck, Salt & Pepper Squid and Pork Lo Mein. We knew that this was more food than we could eat, but we love Chinese leftovers. It turned out to be way too much food, because this place serves up large portions (see the pictures I posted along with this review). The duck dish was a waste of a perfectly good bird. The skin was not crispy and the sauce was mundane. Like the soup, it was edible but thats about it. The Pork Lo Mein had very little pork and not much flavor. However, the Salt & Pepper Squid dish was great. Its name might mislead you. The pepper refers to Asian peppers, not black pepper. The texture is totally different than you might expect: not crispy, but somewhat meaty, medium spicy and really delicious. Sadly, one good dish does not make up for a lot of mediocrity. One spoon down for me.
Excellent Chinese Restaurant. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Bellingham. They serve huge portions at a very reasonable price. My favorite is their Mongolian beef, flavorful, tender, juicy, steaming hot off the wok. Their batter fried items are very good as well, crispy, light and crunchy and served piping hot. They have to be good being across the street from Wonderful Buffet in the Northwest side of the Walmart parking lot.
