This place is surprisingly small, yet not at all intimate. It felt less than clean inside, and the service was slower than baseball. They have a good selection of local beers, which makes up for a multitude of sins, and a fairly broad menu of bar food: appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza, with a few more healthful items thrown in, possibly for appearances’ sake. I chose the San Antonio Special burger, which was very good except for an extreme-ly (get it?) messy excess of barbecue sauce. (The menu said it was supposed to be green chili sauce, but barbecue sauce is more authentically San Antonio, even if it was a Kansas City-style sauce.) The burger was served with an excess of shoestring french fries, way more than even I could eat. They weren’t particularly good, so I didn’t mind leaving two-thirds of them under a barbecue-sauce-stained napkin when I left.THE CURMUDGEONS RATINGS (explained, sort of, on the Curmudgeon-About-Town blog):FOOD: 2 1/2 chili peppers (out of 5)SERVICE: 1 1/2 chili peppersAMBIENCE: 1 1/2 chili peppersVALUE: 2 1/2 chili peppers
It’s a sports bar. I generally like sports bars, and didn’t mind this one although there is nothing about it that made it stand out for me. If you were thinking of the stereotype for such a place, this is pretty much what you’d come up with. The service was better than average and the server was very friendly. No significant wait for food or drinks and yet still unobtrusive. The wings were also very good although I wouldn’t recommend the fries – shoestring style and bland. The beer selection was also pretty good.Value wise it was fine – about $35 bar and tip in and it was convenient to the hotel. It won’t blow you away but it won’t disappoint either.
