We didn’t want to cook for a small crowd tonight, and I was already out Meridian way, so we met at Red Robin for a four-generation dinner. We used to go to Red Robin all the time in college. The Royal Red Robin burger will always have a strong nostalgic association for me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tap into that nostalgia because we are still on this Whole30/paleo thing (I am a very supportive husband…for one more week). So I explored depths of the Red Robin menu that I’ve never even glanced at.I ended up getting the Ensenada Chicken Platter. The chicken was fine. Not very juicy, and the spices/herbs/whatever tasted fine at first, but I was pretty tired of them by the time I finished the meal. The side salad was pointless. The food took forever–probably 45+ minutes. Which led to the unraveling of our kids’ restaurant manners. So…it was good not to cook, but the dining experience was a bit…bleh.I’ll be glad to go back to the Royal Red Robin burger the next time we go. Whenever that might be.
Great Place. We really enjoyed the endless steak fries with our meal.
I had the western salad and it was way to spicy. I think the cook got carried away on this cold snowy night trying to warm me up. I would guess that it was not what the menu specifications called for.
Hard To Judge. My wife and I stopped by here for lunch the other day. I was attracted to the place because they advertise using fresh, not frozen, beef in their hamburgers. That means you can order them medium rare, the way I like them, rather than the usual well done, the way frozen patties are always cooked. I ordered the Burnin’ Love Burger medium rare, which has jalapenos, tomato, lettuce and cayenne and comes on a jalapeo-cornmeal Kaiser roll with chipotle mayo. My wife had a bowl of chili and a cup of chicken tortilla soup. My burger was very spicy and tasty, but it was cooked between medium and medium well. The bun was great, as were the other accouterments. When I pointed out to the server that the meat was overcooked, he said that they have been having a lot of problems with people ordering medium or medium rare and sending it back because it wasn’t cooked enough. I should have sent mine back for the opposite reason, but I didn’t. I won’t make that mistake again. My French fries were just okay: Thick like I like them, but somehow uninteresting. My wife’s lunch was an experience of extremes. She loved the tortilla soup, thought it was one of the best she’s tasted in recent years, but she hated the chili. It was way, way under seasoned. So, it’s a mixed bag at this point. If you like well done hamburgers, you’ll get a very good one here. If you like them like I do, just insist that you get what you ordered.
