I’ll say at the outset that I like Indian food. I’m off to India next week for the real deal! Working up to that treat, I’ve eaten at lots of Indian restaurants in the USA, some of which have been very good. Unfortunately, Taste of India, which I’ve sampled twice now, is not one of those in the upper tier insofar as their buffet lunch indicates. The tandoori chicken is good, the naan is good too, but after that one has to dig pretty deep to find things to applaud about the buffet lunch at this restaurant. The gloomy fact is that there are a number of ways their buffet service could be improved, e.g., the kitchen staff could do a much better job of keeping the hot trays filled (for a long time after I arrived, the only substance in the butter chicken tray and in other trays too was sauce), and someone there should stir things in the trays every once in a while to prevent them from forming a dry and hardened layer of waxy, scaly film on the dishes that aren’t disturbed very often. All things considered, a rating of 3 points is too high. 2.5 out of 5 would be a more reasonable score but half-point ratings are not permitted for this establishment.

Now THIS is solid Indian food. I’ve been here a few times and the employees have always been friendly. Now for the food, we had the meal for 2 and it seriously can feed 5. A lot of options too! The chicken tandoori was so good, specially the grilled onions that come with it. The naan was made fresh, just as all naans should. And of course, the butter chicken was very creamy and flavorful. Good experience and my go to Indian good place in town for sure!

Surprise, Surprise. Pretty Good Indian Food in Bellingham. Ive lost count of the number of Indian restaurants that have been at this address in the seven years Ive lived in Bellingham, but there have been at least four of them. They have all been pretty dismal, although I did once get a decent meal at the immediate predecessor of Taste of India, a place called Indian Flavors. We dined at Taste of India the other day, and were pleasantly surprised. When we visit a new Indian restaurant, we like to order from a short list of dishes that weve had at many different Indian restaurants so we can make some meaningful comparisons. We started with two appetizers: Onion Bhaji and Vegetable Samosas. They were served with two sauces, a red chutney and a green sauce which we guessed was a mint/cilantro sauce (we asked, but the chef didnt know the English name). Both the appetizers and sauces were very good. We had never had the onion dish before, but the samosas were as good or better than any weve had in Whatcom County. The main courses were Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Vindaloo, accompanied by Garlic Naan and Basmati Rice. The chicken was very tender, but not quite as flavorful as the very best renditions of this dish. The lamb dish, ordered Indian Hot, was indeed hot. My wife thought the sauce was a little bitter, but she was wrong. Ah… well, I mean she was right, of course. If youve been married for nearly 40 years you know how to deal with these issues. There was an adequate amount of lamb in the dish. A lot of these places really cheat on the lamb and put tons of potato in its place; however, the lamb could have been a bit more tender. The naan and rice were excellent. Overall, our first experience here was pretty good, and I wouldnt hesitate to go back. Only Sher-E-Panjab (in Anacortes) is obviously better, but thats quite a drive from Bellingham. The prices are more than reasonable. Our bill for the whole meal was only $38 before tip. It would have been higher, but they dont have their liquor license yet so we were deprived of our usual Indian beers. One last word of caution: Dont take this review as being relevant to the lunchtime buffet. Every Indian buffet weve been to in Bellingham has been abysmal. Hopefully, that will not be the case here, but only time will tell.

Butter Chicken. Delicious!02 Dec, 2014Formally known as India Flavors, this place has new owners, new management and a refreshing remodel. The menu has expanded, food quality has gone up and the staff is friendly! Buffet is still $9.95, great value.
