Vancouver Thai Partially Hidden Gem. Hidden away in a small strip mall immediately adjacent to a Shell gas station, Mongkolchai may not be beautiful on the outside, but this small Thai restaurant has an inner beauty from very good food and joyful hospitality. One always appreciates good entry service which sets the tone for meal service throughout, and that kind of welcome was made even better when the owner brought out a free amuse bouche of a salad roll and a small taste of the tom kah soup. Both were delicious, and we immediately ordered some salad rolls and decided to save ordering the soup for next time. Their peanut sauce is a keeper! The owner is a very warm and engaging individual, who is helpful and makes you feel like a guest in his restaurant. Go figure? I ordered a daily special suggested by the owner, which was a spicy cashew chicken and vegetable dish on rice. Very clean and tasty. My wife ordered the Pink Lady, large battered fried shrimp tossed with a sweetened tomato sauce and vegetables. The shrimp were hot, exotic, and delicious. The sauce was a little bit meh, kind of in the realm of an incomplete Sweet and Sour…but not horrible. I was thinking that the dish would better shine with a curry based sauce. Being in a shrimp kind of mood, we also tried the Shrimp S’tay, which were tasty, but…..a bit pricey for 5 medium small shrimp on a wooden skewer ($6.95). The other pricing was quite reasonable, and they have many lunch specials listed. People swear by many of the other dishes on the menu, and the food was generally price appropriate and ranks high on the list of Best Thai of Vancouver, WA. If you happen to find yourself near the Vancouver Mall and in need of something really good to eat, I would recommend Mongkolchoi without reservation. I would even recommend the place if you are having a bad day and in need of someone to make you smile…….

AMAZING!!. Very small place (maybe 7 tables), but don’t let that throw you. The food here is outstanding… thus far I’ve had the duck with red curry, the crispy basil, the eggplant curry, the chicken satay, and the pad kee mao (drunken noodles)… all of it served as the best example of the dish I’ve personally ever tasted.Of particular note to me, the pork pad kee mao is one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten… very complex flavors, and absolutely delicious.
