Best food we’ve had since we got into Washington! Amazing fried clams & scallops.
If I am ever in a coma…. … on life support. I ask that instead of IV fluids, they just prop my mouth open and drip in Wally’s chowder. It is that good.
The Best…. Honestly, one of the BEST restaurants in Des Moines. One of our favorite places. Their clam chowder is amazing. The fish is always light and flaky, never greasy. Fries and onion rings are great, and the tartar sauce is the best we’ve ever had. All this and it’s served with a smile, the staff is wonderful. If you’re in town stop in, I promise you won’t regret it!
Have been to Wally’s many times with friends and family. The food is always very good and fresh tasting. Drinks are fine and a good value. Love to sit on the patio weather permitting. There can be a bit of a wait during peak hours but service has always been good. On a recent visit with 8 of us both the food and service were outstanding. Desserts are homemade and good except for the blackberry pie which was apparently sugarless. Have to say, waiter warned me, so still 5 stars. I am a former chef and restaurant owner and pretty picky!

Enjoyable place! Delicious crab cakes, wonderful texture and wonderful mix of flavors. Chowder was rich and very tasty. Service was good, and the warmly kitschy atmosphere reflected a good ‘ol family fave. I’ll be back!
An Old Family Favorite. Wally’s is a nostalgia trip for my family. My Mom lives in Des Moines and we have been coming here for years. They have good seafood at good prices. We like that we can get Manhattan-style red clam chowder, a good change of pace from the ubiquitous white chowder. On this last trip we tried the fish tacos which are fairly new on the menu. The halibut tacos were excellent. The serving is big (look at the picture) so come with a good appetite if you plan to order this.
