I hate to write this review, but not for the reason you might think…. I have hesitated to write about El Que because it’s a small place and I don’t want more people coming here and making it harder for us to get in. One of the hardest things about living in Spokane is finding really good Mexican food. Most are mediocre at best, and having grown up in southern California with authentic Mexican, my fiancee and I know good Mexican when we taste it. This is one of two restaurants in Spokane that does it right, and I would have never thought The Elk could pull it off. Some of the reviews mention the slow service and rude servers, but my fiancee and I have never had any rude service. It’s slow because they usually just have one person working, but it’s a small bar/restaurant with not much room for two servers, so we accept it. The amazing food more than makes up for it. I always get the three taco plate with rice and frijoles. My fiancee loves the chili rellenos that are roasted, not fried like most restaurants make them. Both these dishes are priced at only $9, a great deal in my opinion, and the rest of the menu is fairly priced as well. The frijoles are incredible, a Tex-Mex smoky BBQ bowl of pintos unlike any we’ve ever had. Chips and salsa are not free, but order the tasty guacamole and you get them included. Go when you’re not in a hurry, and I guarantee you’ll leave satisfied (and with more money left in your wallet/purse than you’d think).

Dark and Stormy. Just come here to drink, and you’ll like it too.

Great service, good food. My husband and I went here for an inexpensive Friday date night and had a great time. We were headed for the Elk but thought we’d check this place out. Sat at the bar, bartender very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is very has a very chill vibe with music like The Roots playing in the background. Ordered tacos that were similar to those small taco truck/Mexico taco stand tacos; had fresh flavor and I could of eaten an entire plate however they are $3 ea, which for that size of taco is a bit on the pricey side. Drank PBR 16oz $3 ea. Overall had a great service, good food and will definitely go back.

Great Mexican food. I was reading the other reviews and they didn’t jive with my experience. When my husband and I went: the food was GREAT, the drinks were good and the service was excellent. We ate at El Que in late September of 2013. The other reviews were in 2010, perhaps El Que has improved greatly since its opening.I really like their Mexican food and I’m not very complimentary of most Mexican food in Spokane. I find many Spokane Mexican eateries to be at best highly Americanized and at worst downright nasty. Anyway, if you like Mexican food give El Que a try. My husband and I were very pleased we ate there.

AWFUL!. This was the worst food I have had – Mexican or otherwise. Apparently they think chili powder and salt are the answer to flavor. The tortilla soup was inedible. It was like a mouth of chili powder and salt. Nothing else was discernible. The hot sauce was lacking flavor and just tasted bad. The pork tacos tasted almost identical to the tortilla soup. The only thing that was palatable was the beans and they were just OK. The rest is going in the garbage. I will never go back and we live just about 1.5 miles away. Simply awful
