This is the second time I have eaten lunch at Herbal Essence and I have been wholly unimpressed both times. The first time was about 4 years ago. I had been excited to try them out because their menu sounded so good. Once I got to, I was disappointed by the flavor of my food (not as rich as it sounded like based on the names of the dishes), and the portions were tiny. The second time was today. I ordered the crab cakes, which were listed as an entree, and a cup of clam chowder to go with it. When I got my order, I had a cup of soup with green specks in it (some sort of herb) and two of the tiniest crab cakes I’ve ever seen in my life, drizzled in some sort of aioli. There was a lemon slice on the side and that was IT (and the presentation was very, very boring and lacking in color). I have no idea how those crab cakes were an entree, they would barely have even qualified as a one-person appetizer! The crab cakes were so-so in flavor, I wished they’d had a better sauce in them. I’ve definitely had better at other restaurants in Spokane. The clam chowder, on the other hand, was not very good. Whatever herb they put in it gave it a strange flavor and the broth was tan, leading me to believe it was made with beef broth. I felt some clam bits in the soup as I chewed, but I really couldn’t taste any clam. Also, a person in my party has a milk allergy and the waitress just looked at her and shrugged when this person was trying to find alternatives to the menu items that she would be able to eat. She ended up having to eat a salad because there really wasn’t much else. Another review here spoke of how accommodating this restaurant was to a nut allergy, but all I know is that today at lunch, they were wholly un-accommodating to a milk allergy. After I paid for my tiny $11 meal, I came back to work and bought a sandwich at the cafeteria so that I could make it all the way to dinner. And this is coming from the gal that usually can’t eat more than half of a portion at any other restaurant and always had to take home extra food. Two times were enough, I am definitely never going back there for lunch again. There are plenty of other great options very, very close to this place.
We went for restaurant week 2014 as it was one of the only places that didn’t offer dessert as the 3rd course. I really enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambience (although it was a little dark for my husband.) The presentation of the house salad was so impressive I actually took a picture. I had the sirloin with huckleberry sauce as my entree, and I wasn’t disappointed, although I do think the sauce would pair better with a pork medallion. It’s a quiet, intimate atmosphere perfect for a date night. I will have to go back to check out the rest of the menu.
I had the best seat in the house next to the fish tank. Do not believe the opinions that people write. I was reading all about what people were writing about the restaurant. One wrote how horrible it was to sit with the fishes and I thought it was the best place. The food was really good and elegant. The service was so nice. When ever I leave the restaurant I always ask for the name of the server so that when I write about my experience I want to make sure that I use the right name. Ryan was our server and he was funny and really knew what is good. It’s not easy to order for my husband so you can imagine how hard to order for someone who does not eat fish, chicken with bones, or certain beef. When a server has patient and gives ideas and does not get frustrated that’s a great server. Make up your own mind to try the restaurant because like my parents use to to say that’s why we have strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream. Service is really good and so is the food but if you do not like fish or very picky with food talk to the server tell them what you like and they will help you.
My husband and I fell in love with this cute little place and have gone back multiple times! The food is absolutely delicious and wait staff very friendly. The atmosphere is great for a date night!
Great Food, Good Price. Had the Kobe Beef burger, it was amazing. I highly recommend it. (I know… not real Kobe… but it’s the same type of cow, the view doesn’t change it’s flavor) I usually only come here for lunch, spend about 10$ and have always left happy.
We went for lunch and the food and service was excellent. Although not on the menu they offered us options including a fresh fruit side for our 2 year old.
Well above average. It seems hard to find dining in Spokane that is not either fast casual (like Chili’s) or fine dining (like Churchill’s). When a place claims to be contemporary casual or even a bistro, if usually falls woefully short. Eating at Herbal Essence is the definition of casual dining. The menu is not the least bit pretentious and very accessible. Prices are reasonable, the food is nicely cooked and the staff is remarkably attentive. There is very little (if anything) that I would change about the place except maybe the name. Herbal Essence sounds like a shampoo or like it is far more earthy than it is. Perhaps that was the mission at the beginning but the name belies the quality of this place and may keep some people away.
