Everything was perfect down to the beer glasses. Could not think of a thing they could have done better. Burger (off menu special) was delicious and sides were innovative and complemented the beef entree perfectly. Fun to see what you ordered crossed out on the chalkboard.

We have been there twice and had a great meal and dining experience both times. The first visit we shared a bone marrow appetizer, followed by a burger and a Ranch-cut steak. The next time we did the tasting menu with drink pairings. The tasting menu was a fun experience with diverse flavors. The servers did a great job pacing the courses with our flow. I highly recommend Bateau, it is our favorite Renee Erickson restaurant.

Has Bateau Lost its Balance? If invited to dine at a friends home I happily eat what ever is served. But when I go out to eat, I see this as a shared relationship between myself and the restaurant. I bring my love of food and willingness to pay. I feel that I also am allowed some contribution into how I would like my meal (medium rare rather than rare, bone marrow butter or preserved lemon and brown butter).Bateau does not seem to have a shared relationship with its diners ….. two friends and I had 5:30 p.m. reservations on a sunny Tuesday evening. Our plan was to have burgers as Bateau was recently voted the best burger in town. One of my friends, the biggest foodie of we three, is gluten intolerant – a medical condition with true suffering on the part for this friend if she eats gluten. We were first surprised and then honestly had to laugh – when it was explained to us that the bun was an integral part of the chef’s creation and could not be left off the burger. Really??? Really?? For a medical need?I understand a restaurant’s fatigue with modifications or substitutions – but to not omit a bun?Foodies go wild here – can you enjoy a burger without a bun? When the German dish from Hamburg came to New York it was was beef minced by hand, lightly salted and often smoked, and usually served raw in a dish along with onions and bread crumbs. Thanks goodness substitutions and modifications were allowed to this version of the burger.

the new renee erickson steak place on cap hill. it def has it’s own style. they buy beef and as the cuts are sold, they get removed from what you can order. and….it’s pricey. you’re going to pay when you come here.the pros….premium beef. it’s good. there’s not messing around here. you get good stuff and perhaps, in cuts that you don’t really see elsewhere. the con’s…some of the cuts are going to cost you, and they will run out. plus, you’re going to wait awhile, it’s super noisy and the staff is not the friendliest group in the world. i will definitely come back and try something less expensive, but i think the drawback is the staff. they were pretty cold to us and we dropped a ton of money.
