Not the best food, but insane value for lunch. This is a popular lunch spot that serves curry. What type of cuisine is it exactly? I’m not sure, because it’s not like any other curry I’ve had before, but it’s tasty. There may be a line out the door, but it goes quickly. If you get the lunch special with the soda, it’s such a ridiculous deal. The portions are massive. I usually eat half for lunch and then save the rest for dinner. The curries with meat are a little greasy, but tasty nonetheless. The inside is usually very crowded so I take my food to go or eat it in the courtyard area on good days.
Get the Daily Special. For $4.49, you can get the daily vegetarian special (usually lentils, mixed beans, or black-eyed peas, doused in a spicy curry sauce) plus a drink. And on Fridays, you can pick two of any veggie option offered on the menu. You’re never going to walk away from this place thinking you had something incredible, but you’re also never going to walk away hungry. Given the portions and the price, it’s a steal and one of the cheapest lunch options downtown.
Cafe Appetizers??. Definitely has gotten skimpy on the portions. Pretty good, if you don’t mind leaving there still hungry. Someone at work mentioned the change to smaller portions in the last several months, and I completely agree. If you need to raise your price, raise it.
The owner who scoops the food is rude and unfriendly. His sweaty forehead grosses me out. The soup nazy at least has a sense of humor. The food is ok otherwise.
Blech. I just tried Cafe Zumzum’s $4 ‘Eggplant and Potato’ vegetarian special and got a togo container with a solid layer of rice across the bottom with half of the rice covered by a ladle of ‘curry’ which had been so overcooked it was basically potato and eggplant seed mush with diced eggplant skins floating in it. The ‘naan’ that comes with it is a flour tortilla folded in half and the special side order of ‘garlic naan’ was a precooked gyro type bread with some garlic butter slathered on it before being slapped on the flat grill for a sec.Not worth the $5.73 I spent on it. I won’t be going back.
Curry Fix. My 18 year old son is addicted to Cafe Zumzum’s curry chicken so I’ve made a few visits and started incorporating more curry, red pepper and cumin into the home cooking. While I like their dishes with spinich, lamb and eggplant, I’m bummed out with the bread. The stink-eye coming from the angry looking staff is a little unwelcoming but they take my money and give me food so I guess I’ll keep coming back.
Cheap, Delicious Grub. The daily vegetarian specials are a bargain and leaves one feeling full and satisfied. For under $5.00, you can get a vegetarian lunch which is quite reasonable, especially in downtown Seattle. My favorite is the mung bean curry with rice. Although all of the specials are quite delectable, I really like the vegetarian dishes that include potatoes in them. Now that I work quite far from this restaurant, I find myself craving the food and wished the owner had another location close to me. Cafe ZumZum Rocks!!!!!!!!
