To a tourist, this doughnut shop embodied the spirit of Seattle. The shop is light and airy with a minimalist modern vibe and sweet graphics to go with the name. We went right at 7am when the shop opened and were the only ones there even on a Saturday morning. We tried the lemon curd, vanilla custard, and chocolate marshmallow doughnuts. The vanilla custard was by far our favorite, although if you are a chocolate fan the chocolate marshmallow is lined with chocolate chips and was amazing in its own right. The lemon curd was good but just couldn’t hold up to the other two. I had the latte with brown sugar syrup which was also tasty but not awe-inspiring. If you want the ambiance of Seattle and some delicious doughnuts, this place is for you.

Had high hopes for the fare here. First time we went they had sold out, so that’s a thing. Go early. Second time, able to acquire 4 donuts for almost $20. At that price, they had better conjure Jesus. The dough reminds me of the Chinese donut dough you get at the buffets, which I love. Actually if I were to make donuts it’s probably the taste I’d go after. We tried chocolate, coconut, lemon and vanilla. The only one that didn’t taste like it was out of a can was the coconut. Best one by far, so if you have the cash, I’d strictly go for the coconut. The other three seemed off tasting, like something they’d serve on a lunchroom pie. All in all it is disappointing for being so hyped.

I love donuts. And this was underwhelming. I had heard great things. But it just didn’t meet the hype. I had a chocolate marshmallow and vanilla custard donut. And my husband had a berry jam and the lemon curd. The coffee was alright. But all together not worth >$25 price we paid. I think what we paid for was the experience and ambience.

In true Renee Erickson style General Porpoise is a beautiful open white space with pops of color including the beautiful bright pink espresso machine. Im a huge Kyler Martz fan so couldn’t wait to see the coffee cups in person (spoiler alert you can’t buy them ). They specialize in filled yeast donuts and usually have about 6 choices at a time. The donuts honestly left something to be desired. The lemon filling was way to eggy and the jam fillings left something to be desired. The yeast part is average at best. For $3.85 a piece they are a huge disappointment. To open a restaurant that specializes in one thing it needs to be the best of its kind and this sadly falls short. I still want a coffee cup!

Way too expensive. I tried to buy my office mates a dozen donuts and I was financially ruined! Little selection of donuts offered there….

UPDATED REVIEW (19-Nov-15):I went back this morning for a coffee and another try at the lemon curd doughnut that disappointed me so much last week. Not only was the doughnut itself still one of the best yeast style doughnuts I’ve ever had, this time the lemon curd filling was actually present, delicious, and in the right amount. Tart and sweet, the lemon curd by itself was done perfectly and oozed out everywhere when I took a bite. I even had a little left on the plate that I needed to soak up with the last bite of doughnut I had left in my hand. More visits are needed to make sure that the quality issues are resolved for good, but I am definitely up for repeat visits. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Rated 2.5Tried to visit a couple days ago and unfortunately they were out of doughnuts by 8:45am. I got lucky yesterday morning around 8am and got a lemon curd doughnut to go. I was disappointed. Let me explain. My first bite told me that this was a very good yeast style doughnut…light, fluffy, and covered in fine granular sugar. However, no lemon curd. 🙁 I figured the filling might have been hiding on the other side of the doughnut, so I tired to chase it down by eating the rest. While that process was not entirely unpleasant, no lemon curd was found inside. There was maybe about 1/2 teaspoon of lemon curd on the side of the doughnut where the filing should have gone in to make it look like it was filed. Hence my disappointment.I probably will visit again to see if this was just a one-off quality assurance issue. I hope it was. I was tempted to give a higher rating based just on the quality/taste of the basic doughnut. However, I was sold a filled doughnut and didn’t get one. So I settled on the lower rating.
