Like and dislike. I have been going to the Sunlight Cafe on and off since 1987. I love their food and the fact that they use only unrefined sweeteners and whole grains in their products. However, i am severely disappointed to learn that their cheese is not vegetarian. I had always avoided ordering cheese items there because I knew that they were not organic. However, a few years ago I decided to ask and was told that although not all of the cheeses were organic, they were at least rennett-free. Today, on a whim, I called to ask that same question again and I was told with all certainty that only one of the cheeses they use was free of animal rennett (and yes I was specific about the question). There is nothing remotely vegetarian about the use of cheese made with an enzyme derived from the lining of a cow’s stomach as the cow must be dead for that enzyme to be extracted. This violates the very foundation of what it means to many of us to be vegetarian. Those who are only vegetarian for health reasons tend not to stay on the vegetarian bandwagon, but those of us who are committed longterm vegetarians tend to have an ethical component to our thinking on that subject as well.I am so disappointed in Sunlight Cafe’s choice to serve animal rennett based cheeses that I may never go there again in spite of their delicious vegan options. People have a right to assume that vegetarian means food products not created through the death of an animal. If I were going to eat food that was created that way, I might as well order a beef burger. Same thing to my way of thinking.

Do I Like It?? Oh Yeah!. I have been here twice now and both visits were great! The first time I was here I met up with a friend to catch up. I kind of was on an all day eating marathon prior to coming here so I just wanted something on the light side. I got a meal size portion of one of their lettuce and mixed veggie salads with a basil dressing. Needless to say on the first bite I fell in love! One of my biggest rules with a restaurant in order for it to get an ace of a grade is that it has got to be fresh and Sunlight passes with flying colors! When I got home I raved about it to Steve and told him that we absolutely must go there together! So in a few weeks we did!On my first visit here my friend got a Nut Burger and said how good it was so my choice was made almost as soon as we got seated as to what I was going to eat. I got a side salad to go with the burger.Once again the food was awesome! The Nut Burger as far as I was concerned was cooked perfectly and put me in the quandary of what menu item at Sunlight do I like best? Do I really have to decide?I was in the mood for a chai tea but they did not have that as an option. I got something called a Yogi Tea which reminded me very much of a chai and the chai mood was met satisfyingly with this new tea I never tried before.Steve got the Tempeh Tacos which of course, like everything else was delicious. We shared some Walnut pie which capped off our great meal here! I don’t have to say it twice, I love this place!

Oh my god- YUM!!!!. I don’t know why I waited so long to come here!! It was soooo good. We had the nutburger with fruit salad and the falafel sandwich. Both were amazing! The service was nice and laidback, with a bohemian feel to the place. We will definitely be coming back soon for their brunch- perhaps tomorrow!

After reading a couple of reviews I wasn’t sure what to expect. I also took a chance and ordered the French toast even though a reviewer said to avoid it. I’m glad I did. I loved the hearty French toast and it was cooked perfectly. Downing had the Mckenna, also very good. It was a lot of food for the price. We were waited on efficiently and our order arrived promptly even though it was a busy Sunday morning.

Omnivore. I really don’t know how this place stays in business. What a waste of a great location. This is a case study of everything that a resturant can do wrong. From food quality and care to service and attitude. A general laziness and whatever attidtude toward not just the customers but the whole business. SHUT IT DOWN!!

Come for the food, not the service. The food is great! Very substantial and always dependable vegetarian food. The service, however, is bad 80% of the time. Don’t go in a hurry.
