We were early for our dinner reservations elsewhere on a Friday evening, so we decided to have an appetizer of mussels at Toby’s. On entering we were advised by a server that a table would be available in 10 minutes, that we could not wait inside and too take a walk around town. We returned in 10 minutes and once again the server said to take another walk and return in 10 minutes. No apology, no smile. Walk we did, but it was to another restaurant.
This is where all the locals go to meet up. I always have to bring my visitors here, and they adore the eclectic style of the busy walls and ceiling. It’s what people imagine a small seaside town pub to be like. The views are great inside and out of the building as it lies on Penn Cove. The small space lends itself to a community feel: I’ve made acquaintances with out-of-towners over that pool table with its wonky cues many a time. The bar staff are like out of a movie, delightful and sassy. As for food, it’s pub grub so a lot of it is average. The exception, I’d argue, is the true blue Bucket-o-Mussels (Penn cove’s famous export). I get this nearly every time I visit. A word of caution to travelers from overseas, since this place is licensed as a tavern, they don’t let kids in, and since it’s not technically a full bar they *mostly* serve beers and wines.
I Wish I Could Live Here. This is a happy place. The best mussels I’ve had anywhere, the wine sauce is drinkable. In my 3 different visits, everything was excellent. And the view is awesome! Can’t wait to come back next summer.
AWESOME. 2 lbs of muscles, great value, best ever! Will be back for sure!
Coupeville Native. Grew up in Coupeville was able to go to Toby’s when I turn 21. To this day, it is still weird to go into the tavern. I always make Tody’s a place to visit when I am in Coupeville. Love the place, food it great! Beer is always cold.
Waterfront Bar with Great Mussels,. Some of the best mussels I have ever ate. I know it’s a bar but this place is always on our must do list when in Coopeville.
Burger was decent but drink was overpriced, I ordered a three dollar lemonade and it was a brisk bottle I could’ve gotten at 7-11 for about half the price. The place was busy but we suffered for it by waiting for a table and then waiting for the food. People could’ve been friendlier too, you could definitely tell we were viewed as out of towners. Again the food was decent and the place smells good but you defintely gotta wait a bit for a table and service at times.
