So glad we found a great Chinese place in our neighborhood!. We’ve eaten in once and ever since have been lazy bums, ordering delivery. It’s in the neighborhood and therefore really close, but on nights like tonight (no energy, it’s raining outside, insert-any-excuse-here…) the fact that Chef Liao offers delivery is a major bonus.First time, I tried the Lemon Chicken and hubs ordered the Mo Shu Chicken; we split an order of Hot & Sour Soup. While the flavor of my lemon chicken was great, it was breaded and fried and all my workout efforts for the week were for naught due to the nutritional overload of my dish. Hubs really enjoyed his Mo Shu, to the point that it is the only dish he orders from here. The soup was phenomenal, but a huge portion. If you’re just one person plan on leftovers for at least 3 days, minimum. Nicely spicy and really good.Next time, I channeled Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally and became, sigh, one of THOSE people. The ones who order this but hold that, and can I have that other thing on the side? And can you substitute this for that? Okay, not that bad but when we placed our delivery order I asked if they could make the lemon chicken not breaded and not fried. No problem, they responded. WOO HOO! My delivery lemon chicken was absolutely delicious but healthier for me sans breading/frying. Tonight, I decided to branch out and ordered the Orange Chicken, same deal: no breading, no frying please, medium spicy. Perfection. These guys are fantastic. The portions are good-sized, and we generally end up with leftovers for breakfast the next day.We are so glad we found a great Chinese place in our neighborhood! You should try them soon.
Chef Liao is our second dining room. Anyone who has eaten somewhere only once is not entitled to review a restaurant. My family and I are not inexperienced in Asian fare. We know how to cook it and eat it, and when we don’t feel like cooking we feel fortunate that Chef Liao is our neighbor. We always order at least three dishes so that we can have plenty of left-overs to enjoy for at least a couple more meals. The pot stickers are house made and the best and the Laio family who are the wait staff are warm and friendly in our experience. We eat at other Asian restaurants as well, but don’t hesitate to recommend Chef Liao. Our favorites are pot stickers, Buddhist tofu with vegetables, BBQ pork saifoon and chou mein, mu shu pork, Mongolian beef, orange chicken, broccoli chicken and sometimes we also get chicken pho when we are feeling low. We don’t hesitate to try new things and have not once ever tried to order egg rolls (although they come with the lunch). Even the picky eaters of our extended family who don’t live nearby love Chef Liao and recommend him to their friends.
Unfriendly and so-so food. We had dinner here on a weekend and the place was empty, that should have tipped us off. The waitress/owner mumbled to us and got us menus. We asked about the spring rolls and she didn’t understand the question. The food was alright but nothing to write home about. Definitely won’t be returning, way too many other asian restaurants out there that WANT customers.
The worst experience I’ve had In long time for any kind of food. ordered pot stickers, they were from a freezer bag. Ordered prawns In chili sauce, ketchup?! The noodles are glazed I’n sugar. Tried to order Ginger beef, got general tsao’s chicken, asked for a correction and got some random chicken! I hadn’t eaten all day and I couldn’t finish my meal. Extremely disappointed.
Bland!. Though the won ton soup was good, we tried 3 entrees and found them all lacking in flavor. I would not recommend.
A Disappointment. I’ve been wanting to go to Chef Liao’s for a while. It’s just hard since every time I get a Chinese itch I go to Shanghai Garden to scratch it (it’s just sooooo good!). But tonight was the night. It’s a Monday night and I was happy to see an almost full restaurant when we arrived. After that things went downhill. We started with Won Ton soup–which wasn’t all that hot and was passable at best. We also had Mu Shu Pork and a chef’s special, Walnut prawns. Again, neither was hot and while the Mu Shu was also passable, the Walnut Prawns was delicious. Unfortunately the service was slow and I can’t say it’s someplace I will return to. However, I think if we had ordered only chef’s special dishes we might have been better off–although the service still would have been slow and the food luke warm. That said, they obviously do very well in luring locals including take-outs. I’d call it about a 2.5 out of 5.
We too live nearby, and tried Chef Liao for the first time tonight — we’ll definitely be back!. We picked up takeout upon returning from a long car trip (too burned out to cook or go out) and can’t believe we hadn’t discovered this place before. The potstickers were indeed great, as was the beef chow mein and moo shu. the kids loved the summer rolls and pho. Tasty, inexpensive, and around the corner — we’re thrilled to have found it.
