I’m in love with the salmon cioppino! Compliments to the Chef… better than most I’ve had while in SF (birth place of the cioppino). I also had the the steamed mussels, delicious starter app we shared around the table. The broth / sauce the mussels were in was very savory. For cocktails I tried the papaya maya signature drink. Bourbon, papaya pure and a touch of spice made for a unique and refreshing beverage. At first I was apprehensive because I’m not a whiskey fan, but the server assured me it would not be offensive to my taste buds and she was spot on. I enjoyed the atmosphere, great change in pace from the typical south sound restaurant. Service was timely, efficient and personable. In conclusion, five stars and I will definitely be back to this diamond in the rough! Next to try is the paella dish I spotted on the menu!

Groupon Deal. Got the Groupon deal of $35 for $76. From the outside, it seemed pretty low key. You may have a hard time to find where the entrance is because it isn’t obviously marked. It is facing the 99th, not Portland. The decor was good and I like the modern/contemporary feel. The space can be better managed to fit in more table or even to accommodate a live band. That is something to think about to kick it up a notch for this place. The 2 drinks, Tropic Thunder and Cool Berry were decent. The refreshing Cool Berry is definitely my favorite. The mini pork shank came in 3 pieces and thoroughly seasoned. The crusty top gives a textural contrast to the moist tender inside. The paella came with some clams, mussels, prawns, and a piece of fish. The dirty rice had abundant of flavor and so did the rest of the seafood, except the fish. Not that the fish tasted bland, but it could use some help to stand out more. It is fine if you eat it with the dirty rice. The seared coho salmon had plenty of flavor at the top layer. The salmon would taste perfect if the seasoning could penetrate deeper into the fish. The sauteed corn, edamame, and crab was interesting and gave a comfort food feeling. The spiced rum cake tasted like off the box. The presentation of the food can use some more creative approach. Most of the dishes I have seen (even the dessert) were topped with baby basil leaves. The service was above average. The waitress came to check on us with a decent pace.

Had the 16 oz Rib-Eye and it was cooked to perfection. Melted poblano butter on top made for something I had never had before. The portion of sides was on the spot, chorizo hash browns and some seasonal veg that the chef got from a local farm just down the road. Pretty cool when speaking of sustainability.

Almost great. After seeing the review in the TNT recently, we headed to Bar Bistro for our Sat. night dinner. The food was great and the service exceptional. All our selections were well prepared with qualilty ingredients. We enjoyed salads to start. Both were crunchy and well seasoned – except the overpowering bacon bread crumbles on the grilled Romaine. For our entrees we had the cioppino and the puttanesco sauce over a polenta cake (Gluten-Free substitute for the pasta). Both were delicious. The prices were extremely reasonable for the quality. Our only problem was with the stark decor and the overpoweringly loud music videos. We were cold in the presence of a hugh screen displaying a roaring fire. We’d suggest warming up the space and turning down the sound so we can talk.Yes, we will come again.
