DO NOT EAT THE STEELHEAD. Let me begin by saying that I’ve had a pleasant lunch as well as afternoon drinks at Castle Key on visits to Manresa. However, a local just told me that Castle Key is serving wild Olympic Peninsula steelhead. Despite the fact that Peninsula steelhead returns continue to dwindle with each passing spawning season, some restaurants continue to buy wild steelhead caught in tribal fisheries (their low numbers prevent harvest by non-tribal commercial fisherman). The number of steelhead reproducing on Olympic Peninsula rivers are a mere fraction of historic numbers and are at great risk. Eating either wild or farmed steelhead is bad for our wild fish populations, which is why the Pike Place Fish Market and The Steelhead Diner (which has never offered wild steelhead) and other excellent Seattle seafood restaurants do not serve any steelhead. If you care for more details check out the websites (and archived scientific articles) of The Wild Steelhead Coalition, The Native Fish Society, and Save Our Salmon.Chad, please take the steelhead off your menu (and keep it off)…and thanks to all for indulging me in this rant.
Pleasant Surprise.. Stayed at the Castle for one night, not very impressive. The restaurant was however a pleasant surprise. Had a really nice window seat, really good service and the kitchen crew was definately on their ‘A’ game. The Wienerschnitzel was so large it almost took up the whole plate, and tasted delicious. Surprisingly good value and if I’m ever in this neighborhood again I would gladly revisit this restaurant.
