Nothing was worth eating. Stale chips, old seafood, dry rice, poor service, the wait staff seemed uninformed about the menu, just unimpressive overall experience. I was sad I chose to eat here.
You walk into El Sarape and are greeted with an onslaught of atmosphere and Mexican culture mixed with Aztec culture. The restaurant is very nicely set up and wonderfully decorated. You are then greeted by some of the happiest, friendliest people not only in town, but anywhere. The people here are very friendly, and quick to help. The menu has the typical Mexican fanfare, and you are greeted with unlimited chips and salsa. The salsa is a home brew, or at least it was at the time of writing this. Very fresh tasting.Prices are above normal for Mexican restaurants, but on par with Port Townsend’s higher tourist price. At most, a few dollars more then average. Portions are large, and food is good. Nothing blows you away as special. Very typical tasting Mexican food you would find at any sit down Mexican restaurant. That is the big let down to me, because a place with so much decor and atmosphere, I wish the food was better then bland. Even though I say it is bland, it is still good. But it is nothing special. The beans, the rice, the cheese, burrito, or taco, all sort of melds together into a Mexican tasting sea of blah. But it is still filling, and it is still good enough. It is not bad at all, and I still keep coming here, so that should hopefully tell you something. If you want Mexican in Port Townsend, it wouldn’t be right not to come here. It is good food that tastes typical, with no notes of going above and beyond of boring. It is nicely decorated, but once you bite in, it is typical. The interior is lovely, really great theme, and you won’t meet nicer people in Port Townsend. I would include this restaurant as a place to visit in Port Townsend.
Best Mexican food I have ever had. The people are nice, the food is good, and the flan is to die for. Don’t believe the negative reviews. You won’t regret coming here.
Don’t believe the high reviewer rating. Mediocre at best!
Amazing salsa!
