Great food, reasonable prices, large portions. Nice wine list (by the glass or bottle) and beer selection. I’ve had just about every dish and they are all fantastic!
Gumbo’s is the only Cajun Restaurant in WV, and should stay that way.. Locals told us it was the best place in town. Service was fine, but we waited over an hour from the kitchen for any food. Granted it was Bridge Day and the place was busy. Party order fried crayfish, fried green tomatoes, crab cake, fried okra, chicken salad sandwich and jambalaya. All the fried food tasted exactly the same. Worse, was the fact that the same ‘sauce’ was plunked down on every order! The crayfish, tomatoes, okra, crab cake all came with the same sauce, which wasn’t very good. The jambalaya came and was topped with two overcooked shrimp with no flavor. The jambalaya was so salty it was inedible. The server apologized and removed it from bill and said something must have gone wrong because they have won ‘awards’ for their jambalaya. To me, it was as if I had put concentrated seawater in my mouth. They had a fairly decent beer selection though. Thank goodness I had eaten at the chili contest in town. Which by the way, their entry with a crayfish chili was not very good. Tough chewy crayfish and a bit too salty sauce.
Really great food! My husband and I love to order the steam pots, also gluten free. They have other gluten free options like fried shrimp but I’m not convinced they don’t just use the same fryer, as I have been ill after eating but no one else. They also have local beef and yummy salads. Probably my favorite local restaurant, just wish a few claimed gFree items actually were.
Yum. Especially the gumbo. Imagine that.
West Virginia’s Only Cajun Joint. You don’t expect bayou cuisine in Appalachia, but Gumbo’s will surprise you even more. Since taking on the restaurant about 2 years ago, owner and chef Susan Jones has re-established it as a favorite among locals and a draw for tourists who visit the New River Gorge from around the world.Die-hard gulf gastronomes will find their favorites – jambalaya, gumbo, steampots, andouille and red beans, fried okra, and po’ boys galore. Even vegetarians will enjoy a tempeh muffaletta with perfect sweet potato fries. Now, if you’re in for the weekend, be sure to hit up the Gumbo’s Sunday brunch. Join the local kayakers and climbers as they fuel up on eggs benedict, bananas Foster, and the West Virginia staple, biscuits and gravy.Sustainable and local food connoisseurs, take note: Ms. Jones is a firm supporter of local famers, so a good portion of your plate is likely to be procured from the area, and you’ll taste the difference.
Food is good but the service was so so. They were out of 4 different drinks I tried to order and they were out of a few food items on the menu. It was hard to get the waitress to come back to the table to refill our drinks.
Great food, but had a hitch…. Love this place, but the last time I went in with some friends we left a little less than pleased. The food was good and we enjoyed, but our server read us a list of 2 specials and read a table of better- dressed customers at a nearby table a list of 6 completely different and much nicer options (SAME server). Ironically, I would have ordered one of the options that she mentioned to the other table had it been offered to us. I hope they do better next time.
