For being a burger joint I was surprised that they were not able to cook my burger to asked temperature. They only cook medium to medium well. This was a huge disappointment because I prefer my burgers on the rare side of medium rare. They also (secretly) charge 50 a topping making my addition of pickles, tomato, lettuce, and onion a $2.00 upgrade. When everything was said and done my Wisconsin burger with a iced tea and tater tots cost me $16.00 without tip. Much better, cheaper options in the Fox Valley.
I am not sure what’s going on right now – I loved McGs and the current owner needs to make a plan and bring it to life or this place could die on the ave and with it the delicious Luther and Badger burgers 🙁 – I have been there three times in the past month and each time the wait fav has not been able to tell me what I can order and what they don’t have anymore for some reason. One waitress told me they would be making a new menu. The last time I went the waitress just passed out the old menu with sharpie crossing off half of the options on the menu. No one seems to know what is going on – the food and service is currently hit or miss. (I’m crossing my fingers)

This place it amazing. Love the food, love the staff. Plus they have live music every Friday and good priced drinks!
First, it appears that anyone can write a review no matter what their agenda. I have found The Mad Hatter, and its prior incarnation, to be friendly and inviting. You must try the burgers! The Luther is an interesting twist, but my personal favorite is the Uptowner. Give it a try, and don’t believe everything you read (except this review, of course).
This is not the old McG’s. The original owner or partner, staff and chef left. Now it’s not very good. Just another OK place on the Ave with less than OK food:(
This was Mc G’s – changed their name. So my husband works across the street and used to eat there once or twice a week. He said it USED TO BE amazing and would never shut up about it. So I meet him for lunch and it was TERRIBLE! Like horrible, in the way that you’ll feel completely ripped off. 1st) they changed there name from Mc G’s to The Mad Hatter. And changed the staff apparently too. (possibly under new management?) 2nd) My husband’s burger was so covered in ranch, that he could not physically pick up the burger. The bun turned into mush. He sent it back, but the second one came out just as nasty. 3rd) Their day time waitress was incredibly unprofessional and rude. She also got my order wrong and acted as if it was my fault. 4th) According to my husband, they also got rid of the lunch chef, who used to make a wonderful burger. I waited tables years ago, so I am usually very patient with waitstaff and understand that restaurants as a whole can have a bad day. But this experience was so bad that my husband hasn’t been back there since. I tried contacting the manager twice, and got no response.
