Great gourmet burgers, fun staff, awesome.
Nice pub. Top notch beer selection, fantastic outdoor seating area. Stopped by for lunch on a Thursday. The restaurant was pretty busy, but we were promptly seated in the bar. We tried the jalapeno poppers, which were obviously handmade and really good (not the fried globs you get at most bars). I ordered the black & blue burger, and I was happy with the quality of the meat (and the bacon!) as well as the bun. This isn’t the best burger in Madison, but the flavors were right on and I wouldn’t hesitate to get another burger here. Skip the parmesan garlic fries (just frozen fries topped with some shaved parm and minced garlic) and try something else (the sweet potato fries looked really good). The avocado salad was also pretty tasty.Service was pretty good (could have been a little faster), but nothing fantastic. I expected a bit more, but this place is a nice addition to the area. It’s a shame to see such outright bashing from a previous reviewer who had one bad experience and apparently has made this his/her personal vendetta. Give the Free House a chance; I think you’ll like it.
Love it!. I have been to the Free House multiple times and every time I have a great experience and discover something new and exciting. This is my new favorite spot in Middleton. What first brought me here was the name, taken from name of pubs in England. I spend quite a bit of time over seas and must admit the pubs out there have an amazing atmosphere. The Free House has the same relaxed feel that makes you want to just sit there all afternoon enjoying the weather, company and food/drink. The great outdoor space and large glass windows are amazing to be able to enjoy the weather.I have been there with many different groups and everyone enjoyed themselves. I would say that we have now sampled half the menu, and have enjoyed all the food. Though the buffalo wrap could use some more sauce, but that is simply because I really enjoy buffalo sauce. The service has always been friendly and attentive while not over bearing. I agree with some of the previous posts that yes, the sweet potato fries are super delicious and a great side to their sandwiches. This is truly a great place to sit and relax with friends and family and enjoy some great drinks and food.
Right at Home. I work very close to The Free House Pub, so stopping by for lunch or for a drink after work is very convenient. Honestly, I would still be going even if it were not so close! I have tried the ABLT sandwich, the salmon sandwich, and the Cobb salad, and have started to repeat those few rather than continuing to branch out because they are so good I don’t want to miss a chance to have one of them as my entree! I can’t say enough about the sweet potato fries and the fried cheese curds. It’s hard to get a sweet potato fry just right without being to crunchy or mushy, but Free House has really nailed it. And without exaggeration, the cheese curds rival any I’ve had anywhere in Madison. When I’m with a group, multiple orders are brought, and there are never any left. The bar area and main dining area are great, but the patio is just the best. There is enough room to accommodate a large group, but there aren’t so many tables where you feel overcrowded. I plan to spend as many evenings this summer on the Free House patio as possible, and as soon as the weather turns cold, I’ll continue to enjoy the menu, drinks, staff, and atmosphere indoors. The Free House fills a niche in downtown Middleton, and I hope popularity only grows as word continues to spread!
Dinner and Drinks with Friends and Family. I have been to the Free House numerous times since it’s unofficial Opening last month. And I have to say that I have enjoyed it every time I have been there.. We have gone as a family with young kids for dinner and as a couple with friends for drinks. I love their bar area with the large glass doors that open up to the patio, which makes for a pleasant and relaxing evening for socializing with friends. AS for the food ,I have been working my way through the menu………… a few of my favorites are the avocado salad with chicken and the jalapeno poppers ( more of a stuffed popper). I love that you can replace fries with a side of lightly dressed greens . Excellent healthy alternative! Then there is the drink list.. They make a delicious long island tea. And I love that they are supporting local distillers and brewers. Thanks to FH I have discovered a wonderful new wine, Vinho Verde, perfect for drinking on the patio.During all of our visits the staff has been attentive and friendly, especially Corey and Lana 🙂 I have also noticed the improvements from our initial visit opening night to my most recent visit,last visit last night. Everything seems to be falling into place for the Free House Pub!!!! An excellent addition to downtown Middleton. Only recommendation is to add a little sweet something to the menu.. hint hint hint 🙂 i highly recommend the Free House and hope to see you out on the patio!
