Big disappointment. First, let me say that the service at Shanghai Bistro, was excellent. The wait staff seemed generally happy and up-beat. They were efficient and were as helpful as they could possibly be. It was a shame that they had to work with such uninspired food. The first thing that you notice is that the menu tries to be very upscale. There are many choices, and the menu isn’t very clear as to how the dishes are prepared. I ordered the Spicy Scallops. My husband ordered the Beef Tips with the chili paste glaze. The beef tips were okay. They arrived at somewhat room temperature. The glaze tasted like it came out of a jar from the grocery store. The dish didn’t come with rice, but the waiter offered to throw it in at no charge, because that’s all you get… is the beef tips on a bed of lettuce. This dish was expensive, considering all you got was the beef tips and a little rice, at $12.50ish. That was the better of the two entrees. The Spicy Scallops were not what I expected at all. The waiter told me that they were in a spicy tomato type sauce, and suggested that I order other vegetables mixed in. He said that the dish only comes with onion, and it can get really strong if you don’t order the extra vegetables with it, for an extra $.50. I’m glad I took his suggestion. The dish arrived in a bowl. It was very soupy… in fact, I believe it was a can of Campbells tomato soup with some red pepper flakes added. The only nice thing I can say is that at least it was hot in temperature. This dish was over $14.00. The fried rice was basically white rice with some beef broth added to make it brown colored. There were no onions, no peas, no egg, no nothing to indicate that the rice was fried in a wok. The Shanghai Bistro is trying to be an upscale restaurant, and yet they have flatware that they got from a cheap fire sale at some restaurant supply house. If you want to serve upscale, and EXPENSIVE food, at least have flatware on the table that looks like it will make it through the dishwasher. I can get, and will get, much better Asian food, for a much cheaper price from any number of other places and bring it home to eat. It’s a shame, because Hudson really needs a nice, sit-down restaurant that serves good Asian fusion food. Shanghai Bistro is not it.
