The Freighthouse is a La Crosse institution. My parents always tell me stories about coming here when they first moved to La Crosse decades ago. It had a fire at one time, and you can still see the charred wood in the arch above the bar. Growing up, this was the place where we would go out on special occasions and it remains much the same as it did when I was kid. The prime rib is the star of the menu, and I recommend opting for the lighter fare option or splitting the engineer’s cut with another hungry friend. The salad bar is delicious – toppings and dressings remind me very much of a supper’s club salad bar. Don’t forget to have the grasshopper pie with cookie crust for dessert, also excellent! The waitstaff at Freighthouse are very friendly and accommodating, and it’s the perfect place for a family night out or just drinks in the bar. krismlars.com

Great Meal. We were in La Crosse last weekend for the MOSES Organic Farming Conference and decided to forego the organic meals at the conference (we have not been impressed with the organic food served there). So we had supper at The Freighthouse and had a lovely meal. The wait staff was superb, attentive without being in your face. The Margarita was delicious and generous. I had the Lighter Fare salmon which was cooked perfectly, moist and delicious. Also a great loaded baked potato and a delicious, huge Caesar salad. My partner had the tenderloin of beef which he said was cooked right and very good. The Freighthouse is cozy, decorated nicely, and a good place to get a nice meal.

This is a favorite… My wife and I eat here about 2 times a year, yes it is expensive. We go to dinner here on our anniversary and my wife’s birthday. We simply love it, my wife always has the King Crab, and I always get Prime rib. It a special treat for us. Always have a good meal here.

Basic food done well. Sometimes reviews get in the way of the obvious. A busy restaurant is a good restaurant. And the freight house is a busy restaurant. Steaks and beef are simply grilled, but to a good standard. Same for seafood. The scallops are very good, cooked in wine/butter/green peppers. They are not grilled, perhaps that turns some people off. The price is higher than its peers, but part of that is due to it being such a successful business restaurant. (note – no tie required, most people are in blue jeans. Also, other than Diggers, its the oldest continuing restaurant restaurant downtown, literally unchanged since the 1980’s. One comment about the bland servings some have commented about. In the past, I thought they were too salty. Last time there, I thought the rice was bland too. I think the health police got to them (there are two major health centers in town) and they may have gone light on the salt compared to the past. Remember, if its a little less salty than you expect, they do give you a salt and pepper shaker and you can use it for free!

I grew up in LaCrosse and the Freighthouse was always the best in town. The food was worth the top dollar prices. However, I took my family there this week and I cannot give the food a great rating. The mushroom side dish was extremely salty. My lobster was over cooked even though I asked them not to. My sisters steak was not cooked to order ( was way over cooked). They brought a second steak and it was not much better. I was wondering who they hire to cook the meals, are they real chefs? The wait staff is awesome and very professional. The manager comped the two meals. I keep hearing about the inconsistency in their food quality lately and guess that’s what I experienced. A restaurant should not charge top dollar for food that can’t meet that Standard. I won’t go back again.

The scallops were horrible. If you’re not there for red meat, don’t go.

So-so at best. The food was decent, but sorely overpriced. I had one of the daily fish specials (Halibut) and while it was a nice cut of fish, it didn’t taste like they’d even seasoned it with salt and pepper before cooking it. My husband ordered the prime rib/shrimp combo and had the same complaint, bland in general. It has a cool atmosphere, but i don’t think we’d go back.
