Wow. I haven’t been this disappointed in a long time – one disappointment after another. First off we requested a booth and were told they are reserved for more then 2. Fine, we will take the too small table up against the wall. I would understand their point if the restaurant was busy but the booths were empty the entire time we were there. I had a nice German Riesling and my husband enjoyed a good craft bourbon. Only craft beers and whiskey are served. The dinner salad was bland – I only tasted the oil in the vinaigrette. The salad contained some carrot shreds and a few thin cuke slices but since tomatoes are in season, I was disappointed that there were none on the salad. Warm homemade bread came with the salad. I am a big fan of bread but this disappointed. Nice crust but the taste was doughy. And they served it with orange infused butter. The orange taste was very overpowering. Again disappointed. I ordered chicken (bone in leg/thigh) with a grilled vegetable relish, eggplant Parmesan and roasted cauliflower ($26). The chicken was no better then what I can buy at the deli of my grocer, the grilled vegetables were overpowered by vinegar and the eggplant was bland and a bit dry from being fried into oblivion. I tried to finish the eggplant but couldn’t. My husband couldn’t do it either. At least the cauliflower was well prepared. My husband ordered baked trout (small, thin and over cooked to the point of being fish jerky) served with tasteless quinoa that was missing the zucchini, carrots and red pepper it was supposed to contain. His green beans were good. His comment is that he would have been disappointed with this meal if it cost $12 but since it cost $26, his rating was a 2. We left hungry and stopped for dessert somewhere else.
A surprise!!! A local restaurant that specializes in farm to table creations. Very friendly environment with everyone feeling like they belong to a community. I had spicy pork belly as appetizer then went for the ribeye steak. Generous portions. Tasty food! Very good!!! Even the bread is excellent. Will definitely come back again! Highly recommended.

This might well be our favorite restaurant in La Crosse. We used to come to this location when it was Kate’s, our former favorite. The cocktails were great (I loved the Edgar’s Manhattan). We started with beef cheeks dressed with a Korean kimchee, then my spouse had chicken with a mole sauce and incredible gnocchis, whereas I had the osso bucco with white beets (tasted like turnips), and a fabulous blue cheese polenta. Incredible tastes. Our only regret was we couldn’t stay for dessert (the chocolate hazelnut baklava looked really good). We’ll definitely be back, though.
I came here with friends for the Sunday night special of $5 for craft cocktails (AMAZING!). The cocktail list had good variety – traditional drinks such as the old fashioned and manhattan – as well as more modern drinks. We also tried the grassfed burger (also on special for $7 that evening) and the squash ravioli. The burger was excellent but the squash ravioli was out-of-this-world delicious. I didn’t even know squash could be that good, but it worked so well with the cranberry and sage. It’s a seasonal menu so the restaurant probably only has this in the fall but it’s oh so good! The waitstaff were very friendly but seemed a bit flustered at times due to the number of groups coming in that had seen the specials advertised on social media (maybe more waitstaff on busy evenings!?). Restaurant is located in the old Kate’s on State and still has the same, cozy feel! krismlars.com
This is my favorite restaurant in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I’ve been here three times in over a year, and would happily eat here each time I’m in town! The menu changes daily based on what’s available from local farmers, but I’ve never had a bad meal here.Last time we came here, I enjoyed the house salad so much, I ordered another one! The small plates are perfect for sharing and the options range from vegetarian options, to meat heavy, to gluten-free, but they are always unique and delicious. If you’re looking for a fun date night place, somewhere to take mom, or just want a fantastic meal, I’d recommend you check out The Mint. monikamcmahon.com
