I have mixed feelings about Eldorado Grill. The flavors: sensational. The atmosphere: inviting. The portions: meh. The price: upscale. The service: mixed. The two of us originally tried to visit Eldorado Grill on Saturday night. The hostess seemed very confused. Several patrons were standing near the hostess area complaining about the slow service. The hostess finally told us it would be a two hour wait and we decided to try another time. No big deal and the fact that they were busy is a good sign, but the hostess definitely didn’t seem to have it together.Since we were in the area, we tried again on Sunday and were able to be seated immediately. The hostess told us we could either sit in the bar area for the Happy Hour menu or the dining room for the regular menu. We elected for the dining area. The room is beautiful with exposed wood beams, a high shelf w/liquor bottles, a beaten copper mantle on the fireplace, a mural above the fireplace and glassed in cabinets filled with Western pulp books and various southwestern paraphernalia. Our waitress was friendly enough and brought over the menus. The tequila and mescal menu is impressive — many varieties I had never heard of and they have various flight options available.Where I’m from, inexpensive southwestern restaurants are ubiquitous. So as I was perusing the dinner menu I was somewhat apprehensive. The prices were about $5 higher than I would expect, and they charge for the chips and salsa. Nevertheless, we ordered the chips and salsa. I also ordered the Pasilla Chile Chicken Enchilada and my partner had the Grilled Lobster, Shrimp, and Crab Enchiladas. Our waitress brought a huge basket of chips as well as a small dish of salsa. The salsa was incredible – fresh, bright, and the charred pepper flavor was intense. We really enjoyed it. I was mildly concerned as we still had a large basket of chips, but no salsa left. Our waitress came back by and asked if we’d like more salsa and then refilled it from a pitcher. I can’t really describe just how good the salsa was! When my chicken enchiladas came, I was again mildly concerned. Three small tightly rolled enchiladas with just a hint of salsa verde, a scoop of rice and a small side of beans. It’s a reasonable portion of food, but certainly not what we’re used to in the midwest and for a hefty price. Once I started eating though, I was very pleased. The chicken enchiladas and salsa verde were so flavorful. The rice was dense with almost a corn bread consistency. I tried some of my partner’s seafood enchiladas and again the flavors were spot on.By the end of the meal, I was very impressed with the quality of the food. The portions could have been a little bigger, the prices a little lower, but the quality was so good, it was worth it. I’m probably not going to head back there if I’m feeling famished, but if I’m in the mood for some quality southwestern food, this is a great option.
