Good food but easy to spend more than you planned. This is my favorite place to eat in Madison–the ramen here is every bit as good as you’d get in Tokyo.I’d caution, however, on getting too many drinks and appetizers—it’s easy for a cheap meal to get expensive quite fast. I’d reccomend getting just a bowl of ramen, maybe with a drink. The portions are enormous, so an appetizer and a bowl of ramen is way too much food per person: if you want an appetizer, split the ramen with a friend (you can’t really take leftover ramen home in a managable way, so having too much really is a problem).

The entres are puny! Spent $60 and walked away. The large salad was very small. I would need four entree orders to actually make a decent meal. IThis restaurant is all about sampling.

Faux Asian. This is Asian noodles for folks who have never had the real thing. Very disappointing dishes.

Great buns and dumplings!. We made a reservation for Thursday evening during Restaurant Week. It was pretty busy, but our table by the bar was ready and we were seated right away. We had a very nice and helpful waitress and our dining experience was quick and pleasant. For the Restaurant Week tasting menu, we each tried a bun (spicy pork and Korean beef), 4 dumplings (shrimp&pork and pork&scallion), a ramen bowl (pork broth and chicken broth), and rice-wrapped ice cream (sesame and mango). Umami’s buns and dumplings are out-of-this-world delicious! Unique and well-made. The buns are a thick pillowy dough folded over savory filling like pork or beef. The dumplings are thin-skinned particles with fantastic fillings as well. Next time, we will likely just stick to buns and dumplings simply because they are that good. I recommend both the sweet and spicy dumpling sauces. The ramen bowls were also delicious and HUGE. The noodles were very tasty and the broth was nice as well. The egg was perfectly cooked and was the best part of the bowl. The dessert was interesting. A gummy rice paste wrapped around a ball of ice cream. It was good, but I wouldn’t get it again.Moral of the story: go out to Umami for some fantastic pork buns and dumplings right now! (and bring me with you!)

Hot Buns!. The pork buns get a lot of rave reviews and they’re well earned. They run the gamut on flavor and texture–tender pork, tangy and crunchy pickles, and soft pillowy buns that acted almost as taco shells. Just awesome. So good in fact that we added an order of the beef buns, which had a more aggressive seasoning/sauce, but were very good too. The chicken and mushroom dumplings were nicely seared, though I didn’t get much flavor from the shiitakes (I’d give the dumpling edge to Dumpling Haus). I’m not a huge ramen fan and Umami didn’t change my mind on that front, though I did appreciate the well-crafted elements of that dish–fresh noodles, subtle broth, more tender pork–except for the off-putting flavor and texture of the nori. The interior has a pretty trendy look and vibe–fairly minimal, chic decor and a full dining room even on a Thursday night. Service was fine and prices are very reasonable (mostly between $5-10). Overall, Umami provided a unique and terrific meal. Grade: A-

Deliciously Different. Finally made it to this restaurant and wonder why we waited so long . Everything we tried was yummy . The pork buns and the dumplings were out of this world . We dont have much to compare it to as it was a new experience for us and that is what made it so fun . My husband is leery of ethnic restaurants but he has changed his tune after visiting Unami . A must is the pork buns and the pork or other dumplings . Everything they brought out to other tables looked well presented and tasty . Service was great . We also tried the Ramen which is a far cry from what most of us think when we think Ramen ! A great place that wont break the bank – We will be back .

Pork Buns!. The ramen has been ‘eh’… it’s tasty enough but not amaaaaazing. However, the rest of the menu is stand-out awesome. Get the pork buns – texture and taste explosion in your mouth!!! And their cocktails… mmmmmmm. And the dumplings. And salad. Did I mention the cocktails? Darnit. Now I’m hungry. Might just have to head to Umami tonight!
