I love Thai food. We’ve been to Sa-Bai Thong on the West side many times and it’s always great! So flavorful and delicious. I was looking forward to trying this location. We went for a late lunch on Saturday. There was plenty of parking and plenty of seating. Our waiter ushered us to a table and then brought us water. We ordered the gui chai (chive dumpling), the pork larb, and the pad thai. I’ve had chive dumplings before, but this preparation was different. There were two steamed rice-flour dough bite-sized dumplings. I was not a fan of the texture. I definitely prefer these fried. The flavor was good. I’ve also had amazing larb before but this was not it. Two lettuce leaves filled w/ground pork and onions. It was fine, but not particularly flavorful, not at all spicy, not much ground rice and I thought the portions seemed small. I was still quite hungry after we finished. Similar to the larb, the pad thai was fine but far from the best. Very little spice, not a ton of vegetables, it was a decent portion and had some hints of flavor but didn’t have the fresh and intense flavors I associate with Thai food. We’ll probably just stick with the West side (Odana Road) location.
It’s interesting that there’s little to actually say about SBT. The service was friendly but sort of programmed. The interior is fine, but showing age. No complaints about dishes, but nothing to rave about. So, Sa Bai Thong is fine for Thai, but perhaps not exceptional…
Oldy but goody. We’ve been going to this restaurant for years. Oddly, we’re not so much into Thai food – meaning main dishes. But ever since we started our first meal with appetizers years ago, we got hooked on those appetizers. We usually order two different appetizers per person, plus dessert at the end of the meal, and that is usually filling enough (but you won’t get stuffed). We alternate out of the menu of a dozen or so appetizers, choosing different combinations every time we go there. The only thing is – it seems the appetizers get a tad smaller over the time, and prices definitely get higher, but that’s unescapable trend everywhere else too, so it doesn’t yet spoil our experience with this old time favorite.
