Pretty Terrible. My husband and I each ordered a pasta dish, both of which were exceptionally bad. The pastas were both drowning in heavy, tasteless sauces and were served with a remarkably unappetizing presentation. The waitress said nothing even though we clearly had not eaten more than two bites and we promptly declined to take the leftovers home. Never going back – Olive Garden is a considerable step up.

Great for food as art. A group of us went for restaurant week. Various dishes included the tuna tartare, the lobster bisque, duck, rib eye, scallops, carrot cake, chocolate cake. With the exception of the lobster bisque, each plate (course) consisted of approximately 2 tablespoons of total food. Beautifully, artfully arranged, and invariably, delicious. Unfortunately, even on the most sensible diet, the portion size just didn’t warrant the overall price during restaurant week, let alone at normal prices. We did spy some other diners enjoying regular menu items, many deconstructed. They all looked invariably small. I’m sure they were delicious. In prior published reviews, much was made of local sourcing. I asked about the nature of my duck, which apparently came from Minnesota. Our waiter, while very professional, didn’t have much of a sense of humor regarding the locally sourced food, probably because most of it (e.g. scallops, tuna, duck) came from considerably more than 50 miles away. The wine list had numerous affordable options, and all staff is gracious, if not a bit condescending. In all good consciousness, I can’t recommend the place for anything beyond experiencing food as art…in terms of value, I’ll stick with a museum.
We had a really nice meal at Steenbock’s. We opted for the 3 course chef’s tasting menu for $45 per person, which comes with smaller portions than the regular menu items. Steenbock’s is a fancy restaurant and the presentation was meticulous. Great flavors, especially the poached egg dish, which came with sweetbreads and a deliciously crispy (yet not breaded) piece of chicken. The portions were fairly small, but we also added a dessert to share and left feeling pretty full. The restaurant had modern styling and good ambiance. You will pay a hefty price for any of the entrees here ($34 for the rack of lamb) but the first and second course options are more reasonably priced. No liquor is served, only beer and wine, but the beer and wine list was more than adequate. Overall a good experience with good food. The service could use some refinement as they seemed inexperienced and somewhat uninterested. The price will keep me from coming back any time soon ($112 for 2 chef’s tastings, 2 drinks, and 1 dessert, before gratuity), but it is nice to have another high-end dining choice in Madison.
