My wife and I have been there a few times, and are usually happy with what we get. This past Thursday however was not the case. We chose to enjoy our anniversary there and unfortunately it was a mediocre experience. Understaffed, with one visible waitress and no hostess to seat us we waited a bit before she came to greet us. We ordered seven different small plate dishes as we like to try different things and the watermelon rinds never fail. We asked that they come out when they were ready as to not overburden the kitchen or get everything at once so that there is no roomon the table… Easy to guess what happened right? Our scallops were lukewarm at best and the crab cakes (Which we normally love) were just ok. Service was slow, with only four tables filled. Lack of staff and cold food is never ok!Friendliness is always appreciated as is good service… Sadly we experienced neither.
Disappointing. As foodies, we were really looking forward to trying this place, after reading all the positive reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing. The food was OK, but nothing to rave about. One of the appetizers was too salty, and after we sent it back, we were still charged for it the first for us, at any restaurant. When we asked to split an entre, we were told there would be an additional fee perfectly fine, considering the extra effort and items to plate two separate portions. To our surprise, we received the entre on one plate, with an extra empty plate, and were told to split it ourselves also the first for us. The restaurants response to our returned appetizer, and its self-service split-plate approach — at customer expense left a bad aftertaste, and a complete lack of desire to either return to this establishment, or recommend it to anyone else.
It was ok. Server didn’t know much about the menu. Not sure why they call themselves a ‘cafe’. Meatloaf lacked refinement. Presentation was nice but the flavor didn’t deliver – for $20 I expect more than a hunk of meat with gravy. This place definitely has potential – great atmosphere and much better than a chain restaurant, but needs some work. Unfortunately, based on the owner’s defensive comments below I don’t think they’ll bother. Check out Poplar Inn instead – Similar prices/atmosphere but the food is on another level.
