A Masochists Dream. If you like to be treated badly, or just not treated at all. Look no further then this local establishment. The waitstaff is … alive? the food is cooked. and the tables sit in a room huddled together to ward off the neglect. This place looks like a slap-dash affair, so does the food. Just save yourself money and buy it from a grocery store, cook it yourself and maybe invite a few cranky friends to leer at you, or maybe say something nasty under their breath as you eat. That way you can get the charming atmosphere down as well.
Good Fish Fry–but needs help in decor and embiance. Dined (well, that’s a loose term) at the American Family Table Restaurant for Fish fry. It’s a little lacking in ‘atmosphere’ (don’t go there if you want embiance, or a romantic quiet dinner), but the wait staff are somewhat friendly, but they don’t go out of their way to tell you the specials of the day or do much idle conversation. For the typical $7.95 fish fry you get 3 pieces of fish, plus salad bar (I think it’s unlimited), soup, choice of vegetable and potato. The food was hot; corn was from a can, and I had hash browns as there was no ‘rice’ option available. Downside–I am one of those people that when you go out with another couple, you like a leisure dinner, with time to talk between courses. We had not finished our only trip to the salad bar before the soup and main courses were brought to our table. I actually felt ‘rushed’ to finish quickly as they wanted to seat someone else. Wait staff didn’t go overboard checking on our entrees (actually I think she only returned with the check and a puppy box), and I had indigestion (from gobbling too fast) by the time we were done with our 15 minute dinner!Decor is dated and tables are crammed together in one room. It’s seat yourself whereever you find a space. We were literally a stone’s throw away from the kitchen. They have a small salad bar set up in the corner, and in a cramped one room restaurant (already over capacity with tables) it’s hard to navigate. Typical salad bar fare, again–the placement of the bar makes it difficult to navigate freely when there’s more than 1 person up there. I don’t know if this is their normal protocol for serving customers–I chose to eat at a restaurant, not FAST FOOD for a reason. Perhaps this restaurant’s style is cafeteria, but the sign says ‘restaurant’. Nobody asked us if we wanted coffee or dessert, which makes me suspect the restaurant’s objective is a quick turn around at those tables to generate more income. Will I go back there? Probably not–I’ve lived in Wisconsin for 20 years and this was my first time eating at this restaurant. I’ll pay a few dollars more and get a better service, nicer atmosphere and friendlier waitstaff (I highly recommend going to the Ho-Chunk Casino in Nekoosa and eating in their restaurant–great prices, lovely atmosphere, you’re not rushed and the price is right!).
