THE STORY OF HIGHWAY4 The concept of Highway4 evolved at the turn of the last century as Vietnams society and economy began to undergo striking changes and some traditional pillars of society found themselves compromised or under threat. One such institution was the Tu Qun, or Liquor Tavern, a stalwart of the working mans after-work refreshments scene. The remote mountainous north of Vietnam has long been home to not only an abundance of herbs, spices, and local specialties, but also a widely-practiced culture of Ru [Vietnamese sticky rice liquor] production. In 1999 a small group of passionate Foodies, inspired by their extensive explorations far from the beaten track throughout this region, and particularly along the network of Highway4 routes which stitched it together, took strides to maintain the Tu Qun concept by adapting and evolving it to the demands and expectations of modern society. Thus Highway4 was born; an embodiment of northern Vietnams culinary culture.
