  • Sugar: 1/4 cup (50 g) for syrup
  • Water (for syrup): 1/2 cup (120 ml)
  • Ground cinnamon: 1 teaspoon (2.6 g)
  • Chopped walnuts: 1/2 cup (58 g)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Method

  • Dissolve the active dry yeast in 1 cup of lukewarm water and let it sit for 5 minutes to activate.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the activated yeast mixture with 2 cups of self-rising flour and 1 tablespoon of corn starch. Mix until smooth.
  • Add 1/2 cup of honey to the batter and mix well.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 375°F (190°C).
  • Gently drop spoonfuls of the risen dough into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  • Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, then transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • For the syrup, combine 1 cup of honey, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Drizzle the warm honey syrup over the fried loukoumades.
